You say you put an air cleaner on. Is it the stock cleaner? Sprees do not like anything else without radical jetting. Make sure you have a stock air cleaner and make sure the top cover fits and seals properly. Once you get it started and running properly (after break in) you can experiment with air ...

On my Spree, you can start it with the kick start and not hold the brake lever.
To start with the electric starter you must hold the brake lever.

To test for battery drain it is best to use a volt meter as there may not be enough amperage to register on an amp meter. Place the volt meter between the positive battery post and the positive cable. If there is any reading you have a drain. A source of drain on old cars and bikes is dirt on switch...

Sounds like you have a piece of dirt in the needle and seat which is flooding the carburetor.

Typically there is a metal tab on the bottom of the frame with the number stamped on it. Only visible from underneath.

I Second MySprees comments. Have you tested your compression tester? It is normal for an engine with new pistons and/or rings to read lower compression. Remember that new parts (rings, pistons and cylinder) must seat in before full compression can be reached. To seat in the parts the engine must run...

Stripped threads in aluminum heads is a common problem. Most auto parts houses have kits to repair them consisting of a tool to enlarge the sparkplug hole and tap it for a bushing and bushings of different lengths for thin or thick heads. KD is probably the most economical with a tool and four bushi...

Remember in the old days when we ran leaded gas in our cars, we had to change oil every 1000 to 1500 mile, change sparkplugs every 10,000 miles, and rebuild the engines at 100,000 miles. Now with unleaded, we change oil every 3000 to 6000 miles, Sparkplugs last 80 to 100 thousand miles, and engines ...
