Re: 85 Aero - compression problem?

I have 2 other by-starters (I assume that is the elecrical choke unit) - I'll test them and try out another one. I did not measure the float level - I'll try to figure that out and do so. That is the exact compression tester I got. You are absolutely right - I will get another compression tester and...

Re: 85 Aero - compression problem?

Cleaned the carb again paying special attention to the pilot jet. Sprayed cleaner thru and I get a steady stream - then sprayed compressed air thru. No change - still a stumble taking off on a hill One other note - when I remove plug for compression tests, it is always black and wet. I assume this i...

Re: 85 Aero - compression problem?

One other thing - or maybe I'm just typing to keep from cleaning that carb again. Seems like - I was able to prevent the stumble and acheive good acceleration from a stop, going up hill, by changing the air intake (as mentioned earlier I simply removed the air box and place some old blue spongy filt...

Re: 85 Aero - compression problem?

Thanks - that's good to know Here's the latest: Ran the compression test on my 84 Spree - it runs great - has a domed piston which might increase compression? It tops out about 33-35, pull up hills well, a little slow to start from a stop on steep inclines, but no stumbling. Tested out at 101-102, m...

Re: 85 Aero - compression problem?

Removed the filter from the box and it runs same - stumbling on incline starts. I should probably dive right into the pilot jet but one more thing first. I'll pull out my trusty Spree and run the compression test on it. If it tests out in good range, then I'll know I still have a compression problem...

Re: 85 Aero - compression problem?

Well, I've been approaching this the wrong way - I've been thinking in terms of too much air getting through the air-box connection. Since it is acting exactly as it does when not warmed up (having extra gas from electric choke), maybe it is not getting enough air in the mix. I removed the air-box a...

Re: 85 Aero - compression problem?

I warmed up the engine and I performed the test at WOT. I have tried adjusting the idle mix several times with no change - I am assuming that you are implying that it probably isn't compression and I need to focus on the mix. I will do another compression test, then do it with a tsp of oil and repor...

85 Aero - compression problem?

Getting frustrated - I have an 85 Aero engine which seems to have low compression. I have measured it with 2 different guages, read and re-read the instructions in here, and I get a reading around 90 each time (no kick start but new battery - crank for 30 seconds). Here are the symptoms which I am c...

Re: 87 Elite SE50 - Freeze and Bake bearing method question

Mileage on odometer only reads 1760 - think I'll try to keep transmission in place and not replace axle bearings at this point - just seals. I was hoping to have the 10:1 gears for a little more top-end if I ever get it running. When I turn the final shaft one full turn, I get 11 turns on the drive ...

basic mechanics - tightening cylinder head bolts

I have been using the criss-cross pattern tightening technique but I typically torque down gradually, going thru the pattern several times. I am beginning to wonder if the intent is to tighten each bolt to full torque before moving thru the pattern only once?

Re: 87 Elite SE50 - Freeze and Bake bearing method question

Might be the best advice yet - still chuckle about that Pillsbury crescent wrench line.

No worries though, I'll use the microwave I have out in the shop (just kiddin).

Ms. Breaze is very tolerant of my scootertivity. There are worse ways to spend one's time... and money.

87 Elite SE50 - Freeze and Bake bearing method question

Hi all, Putting new bearings and a new crankshaft in my SE50 and want to use the 'freeze the bearings and bake the case' method. Currently my transmission is still in place. I'm assuming I will need to remove any bushings, gaskets and oil seals before baking the case halves? As long as I am removing...

Re: 85 Aero/87 Elite - low compression

Thanks, I'll just buy 4-5 next time. Another piece to the puzzle. I went ahead and replaced the plug (cause I don't argue with the Bear guy). With the air box off, I can block just the right amount of the opening with a rag/towel, and get the engine to accelerate well. Should this be expected from a...

Re: 85 Aero/87 Elite - low compression

I actually tried that last time I had the engine together and the compression went up slightly to 100 or so. Then I got a new gasket and new rings - same problem. I'm gonna go thru again - check the crank seals real close - cut some new gaskets to go on each side of the reeds, check the reeds, and t...

Re: 85 Aero/87 Elite - low compression

I haven't checked spark - I've been concentrating on the compression. My assumption was that unless I can fix the compression problem, there was no reason to start troubleshooting electrical. At $6.00, I will certainly pick one up now that I have located my nearby Harbor Freight. I started with a ne...
