Re: 85 Aero/87 Elite - low compression

I was holding the throttle wide open, warmed up the engine first, and I have tested with 2 different gauges - one thru the loaner program at Autozone and then bought one from Harbor Freight. I have a new battery and am able to turn the engine over for 30 seconds without much slow-down - it gets to 7...

Re: 85 Aero/87 Elite - low compression

The gaskets for the muffler and oil pump for the 2 models are the same part number. Looks like the rings, piston, and head are different, but the cylinder is the same. Think I'll pull apart and start measuring. Maybe I'll get lucky and changing out the cylinder will do the trick. I'll try to take pi...

85 Aero/87 Elite - low compression

I have an 87 Elite SE50 which I was re-building but ran into a crankshaft problem. While I'm waiting to find one, I am trying to use an 85 Aero engine - both the Aero and Elite were bought as projects and I have no history with them. I am using the Aero engine, Aero intake, and Aero air-box, but I a...

Re: 87 Elite SE50 - first crankcase split - tool support

Well, I feel like I'm leaning too much on asking questions and not spending enough time digging out the answers that already exist in other posts - so I did more reading and less typing - here's my plan: I think I can free the crankshaft from the left side case with a rubber mallet - I'm planning on...

87 Elite SE50 - first crankcase split - tool support

Began working on the engine of my 87 Elite SE50 find and was distressed to discover that I was able to grab the flywheel and wobble it back and forth. I also notice that the connecting rod has a little more side to side movement than I would like (about 1/8 inch), but I haven't seen any minimum spec...

Re: air fuel mix problems wit 87 Elite SE50

When I cleaned everything, I pulled off the rings and cleaned the grooves. It probably was not the most meticulous job I've ever done, so I will check - I assume you mean sticking in the grooves. The part number is different for the Aero rings than the Elite rings I have, so if I replace, I will ord...

Re: air fuel mix problems wit 87 Elite SE50

Based on previous experiences, I would never certify as to the pilot jet - many times I thought I had it and didn't. The emulsion tube is clean and I think the pilot jet also. Anyway, went to AutoZone and picked up a compression tester - refreshed my memory on the process with Wikispreedia, and foun...

Re: air fuel mix problems wit 87 Elite SE50

Hm-m-m-m, Checked for vacuum leaks as best I know how (using carb cleaner spray): around reed valve - bolts tight and used new gaskets when cleaned and reassembled around head and cylinder - bolts torqued properly - used new gaskets when cleaned and reassembled around carb gasket - cleaned carb agai...

Re: air fuel mix problems wit 87 Elite SE50

Thanks, Drained the tank and put straight gas in Plug was new - interestingly black though - oily, maybe? I'm using an Aero 85 engine (Elite engine pending rebuild) with the Elite carb and Aero air cleaner but I think the carb air opening is the same (using Aero air cleaner to fit engine mounts). Sa...

air fuel mix problems wit 87 Elite SE50

Hi all, I am working on an 87 SE50 - got it all cleaned up and at the stage of testing the engine. It cranks well, and accelerates smoothly if I manually control the air flow into the carb using a cloth. When I hook up the air cleaner (stock with stock element- element well oiled, then wrung out). i...

Help with new Keli variator on 87 Elite SE50 engine

Hi all, In the process of cleaning up and checking out an 87 Elite SE50 engine, I am attempting to put a new Keli variator on it. I removed the old variator and noticed 2 things: The old variator rollers and ramp plate were greased to the max with grease everywhere (I bought this scooter not running...

2003 Honda Elite CH80

Hi all, I was recently reading up on making my 87 Elite 50 go faster and came across this in the Advance tech docs: "The stock variator, The variator is located behind kickstart housing on the crankshaft has a plate held in place by 3, 7mm screws on the back that limits how high the trans. will...

87 Elite SE50 bringing back to life and more

Hi all, I've recently purchased an 87 Elite SE50 and an 85 Aero as part of a 4 bike deal. Good news is they were very cheap and mostly all there, bad news is that they are going to take a lot of work to bring back (mostly just cleaning and evaluating). Anyway, I've brought back several scooters and ...

Re: premix

I had no idea that was significant - before I start grinding and replacing the shaft, any idea what difference I should expect? In other words, is it worth it? Also, I've read that many simply keep the pump full of oil and connect the input to the output allowing the shaft to keep turning - that way...

Re: premix

I'm sure there are other posts on the subject, but I am a little curious at the previous reply. Why would you grind the gears on the removable shaft rather than just remove the shaft?

I have at least 3 running that way - is there something I'm missing?
