Re: Gyro - general thread
Sometimes the spark plug cap loses contact with the wire. Take the cap off the wire (it unscrews) and see if it is seating right.

Re: contemplating buying a nq50
Every scooter I ever bought ran better after 100 miles. And tires make a huge difference. Try to find the money to get them ASAP. You'll live longer; those old tires are hard as rocks.

Re: Saved 1987 Honda Elite.
Some Hondas of that era had handlebars with a little play in them. If you turn them all the way in the direction you want, and then yank back on the end really hard, they might shift a bit and line up. No tools involved, just you pulling hard and it helps to have someone to hold the scooter. It has ...

Re: Possible Bystarter?
I've had lots of trouble with Honda bystarters. They are likely to fail to work properly and that leads to easy cold starts, good cold running, and poor warm running with falling fuel mileage. The bystarter is a type of needle valve that controls a secondary air/fuel circuit that runs around the mai...

Re: Not as snazzy as the Aprilla, but heck for $75? People 5
Seems like pulling the levers straight is almost sure to break them, so use them as they are. If you can't stand it you could try getting them hot (don't melt them) and gently pulling them straight, maybe with a pipe over the end. I still think you'll break them.

Re: super fast idle
You have something set up wrong in the carb. It's not a massive repair, and probably nothing is even busted. Just take your time with it. Mousewheels is right. If the throttle slide is wide open even when the idle screw is out all the way, you may have put the plate in backwards. Time to retrace som...

Re: my Honda Aero 50 restro thread
It looks pretty solid from here. Did you check compression in the engine? You're right that the thing stopped because of an electrical issue, but it may have been abused. I'd check the engine out before you start making it pretty.

Re: Chinese bystarter seems to work well
The problem with these Chinese clone parts is that the quality control is pretty poor. Mostly, they work, but sometimes they are dead on arrival or they die fast. I guess they are so cheap you could buy several.

Re: Gyro - general thread
Just to let you know, I bought a cable that said it was for a gyro, but the housing was too short. Measure yours, the full length of the cable, the length of the housing and anything else you can measure. Last I looked the dimensions aren't in the Gyro wiki. I found several suppliers of chinese scoo...

Re: New member section?
In my experience it often makes sense to restore the situation to as original as possible. I would eliminate all the stuff someone added, check to make certain all the vacuum lines are solid (or just replace them), replace the fuel lines, clean the carb and figure a way to create or get a replacemen...

Re: New member section?
Really make certain the bystarter is completely blocked off. It controls a second venturi with a rich jet, and if the mechanism is removed and the passages and jet are still clear you will get a rich mixture that will start easily when cold but will run poorly and get bad mileage. Which sounds like ...

Re: not getting spark
Actually, I do. Checking the contact between the coil wire and the spark plug cap is quick, cheap, and has the potential to solve the problem. You can try your system, I'm just telling this guy my idea.

Re: not getting spark
Right, Bear. But I would suggest he make sure the connection between the cable and the spark plug cap is good. They can go bad just from being pulled off and jammed on without being careful. It's stopped me more than once (including yesterday).
