Re: Gyro - general thread

I've been away from this forum for years, more focused on other Honda and then Piaggio projects and, for the past couple of years, a 67 Honda CB450 (the Black Bomber). Anyway, I have a 65 TG50 Gyro, not great but not awful, that's been under a cover in a dark, dry garage for years. It ran about 4 ye...

Re: Gyro - general thread

I used tires like the ones you found at tractor supply. They fit fine. Of course, they are turf tires, not DOT approved road tires, and they probably won't last long or grip very well. At the speeds I ride the Gyro I'm willing to take a chance on them. It seems unlikely that they will blow out at 20...

Re: New member a gyro that won't fire

My Gyro was the same, really hard to start. I finally stripped the carb down and soaked it in a mixture of soap and ammonia and water in an ultrasound machine, and now it starts. There must have been a blockage in the idle jet passages that I never got to.

Re: Gyro - general thread

Try putting the whole thing in the smallest container that will hold it and then spraying carb cleaner in with it until the part with the bystarter is drowned in cleaner. You can buy a tub of carb soaking chemicals but a whole can of spray cleaner is a lot cheaper and should be enough.

Ultrasound in a bath of your favorite solvent works well.

Re: Gyro - general thread

I bought a china carb at one point for the Gyro, don't know which one anymore, but it was a piece of junk. I found that E85 "gas" is 85% ethanol and is a pretty good solvent that melts varnish. It will destroy rubber bits pretty fast I imagine, but it works well inside gas tanks. You have ...

Re: Gyro - general thread

That speedometer issue seems like it could be a dry bushing on the shaft of the needle itself. It only moves at all because of a spinning magnetic disc very close to a metal disc inducing movement, and it's damped by a clock spring. I've had to do a bit of internal work on speedometers and it's real...

Re: Gyro - general thread

Hey Squar - I,too, wander about in here as well as ADV. I have a 1985 Gyro Road Fox, another somewhat unique form of the engine, mostly because the casting for the crankcase is completely different. Also, because of the way the cylinder is placed horizontally the cylinder casting is unique as well. ...

So johnniespeed wrote: "that if you choose not to be tactful and polite , you will not achieve your goal." Well, ain't that the truth? Works every time, even at the DMV.

And a CH250 is my go to scooter, too. A 1990. The best.

Re: Gyro - general thread

Gyros don't have a choke. They have a bystarter that opens and closes an enrichening circuit. It looks like a black cylinder about 3/4 inch diameter and 2 inches long, and it sticks out of the top of the carburetor, with 2 wires coming off it. The 84 Gyro is quite different than the 85-86 Gyro. Do s...

Re: Starter for 1990 Honda CH 80 alternatives.

There's always Ebay. And you can look at the parts diagrams that you can find lots of places. I use www.servicehonda.com and look at the drawing of the starter motor and compare it to a later one.

Re: Just know you should love your honda.

If you are going to work on Honda scooters from the 80's you need to buy a JIS compatible screwdriver. I bought a Vessel brand Megadora Impacta. With that name you know you are holding one of the world's most impressive screwdrivers, and it also actually works and does not strip screw heads. Imagine...

Re: Honda reflex 250 smokes and dies when throttled

F31 and E 2 are the in and out for coolant that heats up the carburetor throat. The piece is just a small casting that bolts to the carb. F33 is a vacuum port. If you think you are seeing in and out there you are looking at F31/E2 instead. You need to be sure that the hoses going to F31/E2 are wet i...

Re: Honda reflex 250 smokes and dies when throttled

Clean or replace the sparkplug. The vacuum system is really not tolerant of screw ups, so look at page 1-22 of the service manual I gave you the link to. If the vacuum line to the fuel pump is not right, or there's a crack that leaks air, there won't be fuel to the carb.
