can i trust my mechanic?

gday. had some trouble with my 89 elite gettin up hills and getting off the mark, after taking it to a mechanic, he said there was no compression.he got a piston kit (one ring was broken), replaced a scored bore and cleaned out the port, took off the kickstarter which he said was part of the problem...

nah no squeek from the belt, the engine purrs nicely once its up to speed. cheers for the reply

yea thats whats confusing me, if it was the clutch id imagine it wouldnt go so great on flats either? but it does. once it hits 20kmph (??milesph) its fine, good and responsive on the throttle, and holds well at 50kmph (30mph).

just picked up an 89 elite for pretty cheap and am having a few probs. ive had a scoot before(88 yamaha razz) and it was sweet up hills, but this one is pretty shocking. im not after a racer or anything, just enough to keep up with traffic. ive read a few posts and seen that it could be the clutch s...
