Re: 86 spree won't run

As my poor forlorn spree sits here dismantled, I noticed oil dripping from the dangling intake. I've worked on another with a leaky oil injector pump and ground the drive gear and converted it to mixed gas only. Is the pump available at all for these, or is this removal of the system the recommended...

Re: 86 spree won't run

Awesome, Pat thanks, I'm a cruiser and not a racer. I'm not comfortable exceeding 30 mph. I'll get one coming shortly and give ya'll a report. Once again, thanks to everyone for their help so far. Love the blue spree, btw, wish we had 'em in the states.

Re: 86 spree won't run

Well, gentleman, I feel a wee foolish. Pulled exhaust got a mirror and flashlight and lo and behold I have a nicely grooved up piston. This explains the short run followed by a shorter run, etc. Shoulda looked at this first I guess. See this on weed whips and leaf blowers all the time, just thought ...

Re: 86 spree won't run

Btw, I see you're from Nova Scotia. Beautiful country. I helped deliver a tug from Staten Island to Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin, and it was the most gorgeous area I've ever seen, the Maritimes. The Straits of Canso were most impressive.

Re: 86 spree won't run

I've already poked, but no major clog. I'll try a cookout or another exhaust I have laying around.

Re: 86 spree won't run

Hello again Pat. One quick question: in poking around the internet, I found another cause of recurring flooding problems is a plugged muffler. Could this be an issue? As I said earlier, when this thing started it smoked to beat * for a long time.

Re: 86 spree won't run

Did all that. I can't stop the thing from flooding the crankcase. I pulled the reed plate yesterday and today and blew it out best I could. Yesterday when it ran like a abanshee it also smoked like something I've never seen. Today blowing it out did no good. It almost took off a couple of times and ...

Re: 86 spree won't run

Ha ha ha. Now I'm back at square one. Won't start. Flooded. Leaking gas out the carb mouth. Obviously got something in the needle/seat. Saw something on here the other day about polishing the seat with a q tip and toothpaste, I believe. I already replaced the needle, and it never leaked before, of c...

Re: 86 spree won't run

Now I'm back to the same problem I had last fall. I can ride about one block and it quits. If I wait 2 min it will restart and go 1/2 a block. Then 1/4 block. When I open the carb drain, there appears to be fuel. There is still good spark. I can run it on the kickstand indefinitely w no load full th...

Re: 86 spree won't run

Hello Pat, After doing the reed cleaning and flip I still couldn't start it. I pulled the plug, and remembered back to my outboard days that some plugs will foul, but will still appear to spark, so I ran and got 2 new ones. After a few tries, and choking the air cleaner off a bit it fired!!!! Hooray...

Re: 86 spree won't run

I started with the simple route and pulled intake and reed plate. I was able to blow some excess crap out of the crankcase this way. It was quite wet, not sure if this gets it all out or not. HOwever, I noticed my reed plate was hanging open substantially. I took it apart and reversed it so the reed...

Re: 86 spree won't run

Btw, I worked on one of these a few years ago that had leaked oil into the crankcase and it took dozens of cranks and created a huge mess clearing the cylinder. I get nothing out the plug hole. I am concerned about the compression/reed plates maybe not creating the proper "flow"? This is t...

Re: 86 spree won't run

The only method I can find for clearing the crankcase is starting without the plug in for 30 sec. I've tried this and no mess comes out the plug hole. However, with the amount of attempted starts I did yesterday and no trace of moisture anywhere I'm guessing it is in the mufffler? Looks like I may b...
