Re: 86 Spree - Starts-Idles ten seconds-DIES

Well, I spent most of the day working on the bike. I determined it is definitely a problem in the carb. It will start up right away, but won't run longer than 10 or 15 seconds. I know the float is sticking because there is gas coming out the top overflow on the carb. In other words, it starts, and t...

Re: 86 Spree - Starts-Idles ten seconds-DIES

Dont take it to a shop. You'll get raked over the coals and they wont know how to REALLY fix it. Your best bet is to cut your losses and sell it as non-running for cheap. You're right, Spree's ARE pathetic and we love them. Theyre small, slow, old and a pain to fix sometimes....and yes, we still lo...

86 Spree - Starts-Idles ten seconds-DIES

Well, I've been trying to get this 86 stock Spree running right for a few months now, off and on. It gets good spark. It is getting fuel. I decided to buy a brand new (not rebuilt) carb, and installed that today. Still does same thing it has done from day one. It has 1,400 miles on it. Engine cranks...

Muffler is not clogged. I checked that. Bike has 1,400 miles on it. Throttle cable returns fine when it isn't screwed onto the carb. After one or two turns into the threads, throttle kind of sticky, but does return sort of.

Re: 86 Spree ALMOST running after 10 years. Almost. Advice?

I replaced the bystarter with a new one, and this time it ran for a longer period, but still died. The throttle still has no effect when you twist it, but it no longer seems to be sticking. Where the throttle cable goes into the carb and screws down, is there supposed to be an o-ring up there with t...

Re: 86 Spree ALMOST running after 10 years. Almost. Advice?

Update: I have narrowed it down to two main problems. And in the meantime, I ordered a new bystarter via Amazon. 1) When the throttle cable is not screwed into the carb, it moves back and forth just fine. When you insert it lightly into the carb but don't screw it down, it turns on the throttle grip...

Re: 86 Spree ALMOST running after 10 years. Almost. Advice?

After a more thorough inspection and some work, I may have narrowed down the problem. Bike and all seals are in good shape. It will start and run for maybe ten seconds and die. I think it's in the throttle cable. When you have it out, it twists and returns fine. When you put it in and screw down the...

Re: 86 Spree ALMOST running after 10 years. Almost. Advice?

:coolcruise: I have copied and printed your advice. I already re-installed the throttle slide...correctly this time. I will work on the bike this afternoon and return when I have success. This is sort of like working on the old Hondas I used to have back in the day, (550/4, 750 partially chopped) on...

86 Spree ALMOST running after 10 years. Almost. Advice?

I came on this forum a few months back and said I had picked up an 86 Spree with only 1,400 miles on it. It had not been run since 2005. I cleaned it up real good, including the carb, replaced the dead battery with a gel-cell, and replaced the spark plug wire. Throttle screw on carb backed out 1 1/2...

Re: Many Hondas - But Just Bought First Spree

I already ordered a... new ignition system WHY ?? I assume you have bought a NEW CDI. The aftermarket CDI sold for Spree has never been reported to have any positive increase in performance on Spree. Why would you replace the OEM unit if it is working ? By your comments, it seems you don't have any...

Re: Many Hondas - But Just Bought First Spree

It's a 1986 Spree. The starter motor DOES work. MotorMike showed me how it works. Gotta hold down the brake handle before you push the button. I already ordered a gel-cell battery, new ignition system, spark plug, etc from Amazon. Carb cleaner as well. Should be fun. I don't think it needs much beyo...
