It's almost SPRINGTIME!

Hey, my fellow Honda riders. It's nearly warm enough to start riding again. Does everyone have their ride ready to go? Tonight, I just finished installing my new tires. (Thanks, Meatball!) Pushed her outside, shot a little starting fluid in the air cleaner, as I knew the float bowl would be dry, and...

Re: Spree won't start. No vacuum? Good compression.

When I was working on an old one that had been parked for a while, I had a similar problem. What you need to do is get the bowl in the carb to fill. found 2 ways to do that. One was to disconnect the vacuum line from the intake that runs to the petcock, and apply vacuum. I used a little "mityva...

Re: '96 Elite S (SA50P) upgrades.... where to begin

Try taking the plate off the variator, it worked well for me. That, along with the exhaust restriction were apparently done by the previous owner. The jet made the biggest difference in both acceleration and top end. I need to recheck the variator pulley and see if it's finally getting full range. ...

Re: '96 Elite S (SA50P) upgrades.... where to begin

Had some success! Swapped out the worn rollers for 7s and 8s, that seemed to help acceleration and even gained a little top end, about 31-32, then put in a 78 main jet, and it will just peg the speedo. That may be all I do for now, as it will go the speed limit on the streets I commonly travel. Of c...

Re: Honda Elite SP de restrict

I've been told that opening up the oil pump isn't needed unless you are running a bigger displacement. I have a '96 myself, and have been asking the same questions. Funny thing is, it would seem that most of the re-restricting had already been done. There was no washer in the exhaust, and the plate ...

Re: '96 Elite S (SA50P) upgrades.... where to begin

Throttle cable is good, carb opens fully, plug is correct and new last month. Brakes are not dragging. The last time I was checking out the variator, I drew a line with a sharpie across the pulley face, so I could see how far the belt rode up on the pulley. There is about 3/8" of the variator p...

Re: Elite 80 speedometer problems

Did the new gear have the same number of teeth as the old one? The most logical cause I can think of would be that it is the wrong gear, and is spinning the cable too fast.

Re: '96 Elite S (SA50P) upgrades.... where to begin

The muffler doesn't seem heavy, and isn't restricted, and I just checked the compression, 120 psi. Plug is light tan on one side, darker on the other. Still tops out at 29. I haven't checked the main jet size, can't see those numbers with my old eyes, but if it was leaning out, the plug would show i...

Re: '96 Elite S (SA50P) upgrades.... where to begin

On the subject of variators, will any advertised for a "Dio" fit my SA50, or is it an AF16 specific part? I have seen a lot that are listed to fit a large number of models

Re: Someone explain this....

The filter itself was not changed, only the rear airbox, and the filter is new as of a few weeks ago. That's what is so weird about this. With the old housing on, it runs great. With the new one, twist the throttle, revs will pick up for a second, and then it bogs down and loses power. As far as I c...

Someone explain this....

So, I've been riding my recently purchased '96 SA50P a bit, and fixing a few little problems with it. It has had some inconsistencies, which seemed to be due to a loose air cleaner. The front mounting lug was cracked, and the rear bolt was missing.. so last night, I installed a new OE air cleaner ho...

Re: Honda SA50P Starting to derestrict

I'm in the same position as you. Sounds like you have the basics covered. I've been told the next steps after that are variator/rollers and gears. Mine came without the plate on the variator, and no washer in the exhaust. I haven't rejetted yet, but I raised the needle. I'll proceed with upgrades af...

Re: '96 Elite S (SA50P) upgrades.... where to begin

UPDATES: Been fighting a high-speed miss, worse when it's warmed up. Fixed a loose air box mount, that didn't cure the miss, but it does start easier. I suspected it was lean, so I moved the clip on the carb needle to the lowest groove. A bit better this morning, but only 24 mph I had a little time ...
