Re: Measure Bystarter Needle Spring

I did, thank you. But then I had to leave right away. Next week I'll have a chance to get the measurements for the wiki and then put everything together.

Cheers.

Re: Measure Bystarter Needle Spring

The bystarter only functions for the first 30 seconds when you cold start anyways. No need to have a solid gold one in there for something needed <1% of the time. Actually you're looking at it completely backwards. The bystarter needs to function 99% of the time, because if it isn't closing off the...

Re: Measure Bystarter Needle Spring

I didn't know that fixing a perfectly good part was Frankenstein nonsense. But I was also under the impression the Chinese bystarters weren't as reliable as OEM.

Re: Measure Bystarter Needle Spring

It's actually pretty simple. I pulled a bystarter off an extra engine I got with my first Spree, and it was missing the needle and spring, but had a brass collar. I just bought another Spree, and some bubba had glued the collar and needle onto the black plastic lower assembly which had the "tee...

Measure Bystarter Needle Spring

I'm wondering if someone could measure the small spring that goes between the "lower needle assembly holder & actuator" and the actual brass needle and collar. It's basically what provides downward pressure and tension on the needle, and holds it away from the black plastic fingers tha...

Re: '86 Spree Noisy Clutch?

Follow-up for anyone who might have something similar. I missed the thrust washer on the driven shaft. There's quite a lot of play in that shaft without the washer, probably 5-6mm or more, so the driven shaft was machining the transmission case. Luckily I caught it in plenty of time, cleaned it up, ...

I rebuilt the whole scooter down to every last bolt and bearing. So I guess if it was something I was going to notice on inspection, I missed it.

'86 Spree Noisy Clutch?

My newly restored '86 Spree is running great. Only thing is, when I let off the throttle at any speed above about 10-12mph, there's a noisy rattle that sounds like I have rocks in my exhaust (I don't - muffler was cut in half, cleaned, and re-welded.) It sounds to me like it's coming from the clutch...

Re: Honda Spree Aftermarket Shock Replacement

The condition you describe has the signs of an air leak. Have you inspected both crank seals? Figured it out. Thank you for the crank seal tip. That led me down the pressure testing route, which is something I wasn't aware of at all. I have way way more 4-stroke big engine experience than small 2-s...

Re: Honda Spree Aftermarket Shock Replacement

Crank seals, no, I hadn't thought of that. They were in good condition when I installed them, and I'm pretty sure they're installed correctly but I've been known to make a mistake in my life. Intake heat spacer o-rings are brand new and all is in good condition there. The airbox is totally unmodifie...

OEM. I cleaned up the bore and lightly polished the brass insert so that it would move freely. It passes all the service manual checks.

Re: Honda Spree Aftermarket Shock Replacement

I haven't, and I'm really stumped as to why it's running so poorly. The latest is that it'll start on the lightest tap of the start button or kick, but then as soon as I give it any gas it dies. Once it warms up it seems to run better, but it's not right. My next experiment for today I'm letting the...

Re: Honda Spree Aftermarket Shock Replacement

Thanks! Turned out pretty nice. I'm still chasing a gremlin where it'll start and run great, but then suddenly at part or full throttle just sort of bog down and lose power and sometimes backfire. It almost feels like the timing is changing but I checked the woodruff key and everything is solid ther...
