Re: Aero 80 revived, but now another problem ...

The manual choke did the trick! Runs like a new one.

Re: Aero125 belt question

How does this one look? #66G3081 Gates G Force CVT Belt. 795 x 17 x 30. Pretty darn close to original spec of 794 x 18 x 30. Can get it through NAPA for $41. Service manual indicates original belt service limit to 15.8mm. I would interpret that to indicate more narrow is better than too wide. Starti...

Re: Aero125 belt question

Thanks Motormike!

You answered my basic question of whether a "close size" would work, and I did find a few that fit that description.
For now, the original belts on the bikes seem fine. I just want to have replacements on hand in the event of a catastrophic failure down the road!

Aero125 belt question

In addition to a 1984 Aero80, I have taken possession of a 1984 Aero125. Both were purchased new by my parents and reflect about 1500 miles on the odometer. Both have been in storage for the past 10 years or so. I now have them running with some minor modifications (bystarter bypass on Aero80 and a ...

Re: Aero 80 revived, but now another problem ...

Picked up some 1/4" fuel line and a cheap shutoff valve (wanted to ensure a solution first) to replicate Bear's manual choke solution. It took about 20 minutes to assemble everything, but once complete, the bike fired right up. I probably didn't let the fuel enrichment run long enough for a ful...

Re: Aero 80 revived, but now another problem ...

Removed, disassembled and thoroughly cleaned carb and components with carb spray, compressor air and visual inspection. Once satisfied all was clear (third cleaning), I reassembled and fired it up. Everything seemed great until the engine warmed up and idled down. As before, unless I worked the thro...

Re: Aero 80 revived, but now another problem ...

Thank you for the quick reply! Here in PA it's snowing ... and a bit cold - even in the garage. Tomorrow morning I will pull that carb and clean it even more thoroughly, paying particular attention to the details you point out. "Lots of plumbing" is a pretty accurate comment for that cold ...

Re: Aero 80 revived, but now another problem ...

Swapped out the petcock with a new one. Verified it was working. Started engine and allowed it to warm up. Once it was warm and idled down, the problems returned - engine continued to slow to the point of stalling, and the only way to keep it running was by working the the throttle. However, eventua...

Re: Aero 80 revived, but now another problem ...

I'm now pretty certain that the root of my problem is an intermittent malfunction of the petcock. Initially, the petcock diaphragm was stuck preventing the flow of fuel. I was able to release it ... at least partially, to obtain flow. Testing it with a small syringe for vacuum it produced fuel. This...

Re: Aero 80 revived, but now another problem ...

Just fired it up and got it running. Tried tweaking the air mixture and found it ran best with screw all the way in. Took it down the road and it died. I now strongly suspect fuel starvation. Probably a bad fuel valve. The diaphragm was stuck shut when I first started working on it, so perhaps it’s ...

Re: Aero 80 revived, but now another problem ...

Repaired a cracked left front turn signal housing mount. When that was disassembled, noted that the wires to the turn signal were bare thanks to a hungry rodent. Sucessfully replaced them. All other wires were in good condition. Doubtful anything I did related to repairs / cosmetic improvements woul...

Aero 80 revived, but now another problem ...

Following a repeated and more thorough carb cleaning, my long-term stored Aero 80 was running great! Had the air screw and idle adjusted well. Did some cosmetic improvements and fixed some minor mechanical issues. Figuring snow would be coming soon, I prepared it for a few months storage - filled th...

Re: 1984 Aero 80 shuts down once warmed up

As an update I pulled the carb and cleaned it more thoroughly. The slow jet was not obviously clogged, but as I rotated some fine wire in the wider portion of the jet, I dislodged some powdery residue. That may have been the culprit. After reassembly, I broke off the air screw restrictor and reset t...

Re: 1984 Aero 80 shuts down once warmed up

I’m going to pull the carb tomorrow and will advice what I find. Actually, it doesn’t run real well on the throttle advance once warmed up. It bogs down and cuts out until I rev the throttle. If I release the throttle to idle, it eventually stalls. Will see what a more thorough carb cleaning brings,...
