Re: How to fix stripped crank splines

That's a better solution than welding; at least you can take it apart without a grinder. My concern would be around weakening crank around that spot, but these motors don't generate that much torque in the first place. That’s what I figured. If anyone else tries this I recommend cutting the channel...

Re: How to fix stripped crank splines

Here’s what I ended up with: I drilled a hole through the crank, cut a slot in the pulley face and pinned it together. Then I put a rubber ring around the pulley standoff to hold the pin in. I figure the crank is basically junk now any so this will at least let me get a few more miles out of it. On ...

How to fix stripped crank splines

I pulled a boneheaded move and didn’t properly torque the drive face nut. It came loose while riding and I spun the splines off the crank. Given the less-than-perfect design I am sure I’m not the first to do this so I am hoping someone has some tips for fixing it. Let me know if you can think of a w...

Re: SB50P Fires but Won’t Run

Solved the problem! I just bought a BBK on eBay and installed it. Compression is good, fires right up and I don't have any more low power issues. It will go 25 mph flat-out and 20 mph uphill with my 220 lb on board. Breaking in the cylinder/piston set up right now, but I'm excited to take this on a ...

Re: SB50P Fires but Won’t Run

Thanks for all your help so far. I'd be willing to bet the rings/pins are out of whack. I'll measure tonight, but if they are new parts are pretty much the only answer correct? Can I just get rings or would it be smarter to buy the whole shebang again?

Re: SB50P Fires but Won’t Run

The cylinder/ring/gasket kit I got:
https://www.amazon.com/NICHE-Cylinder-P ... way&sr=8-2

I've heard some of these are junk, any thoughts on this particular one?

Re: SB50P Fires but Won’t Run

Compression is at 50 psi. If I put oil down the plug hole it gets up to 100 psi. I just don't understand why it's so low. - Cylinder/piston/rings are new - No visible leakage on the crank seals - I did not replace the cylinder head, but I did replace the metal head gasket - I fabricated head-to-bloc...

SB50P Fires but Won’t Run

My SB50P will not run. I can get it to fire as long as the starter is engaged but as soon as I let go of the starter button it stops. Here’s what I’ve done so far: — Cleaned carb (tested every opening and cleared with carb cleaner and small wire) - Replaced cylinder head and piston - Oiled air filte...

Re: SB50 Carb - Bystarter On Outboard side

Good question, I have no idea what I’m doing rebuilding a carb and I just want to bolt something on that will work straight out the box.

SB50 Carb - Bystarter On Outboard side

I want to buy a new carb for my 1988 SB50 but I can’t find any replacements with a bystarter on the outboard side like mine has. If I use one with the bystarter on the inboard side it interferes with the shock/spring. Does anyone know where to find the right one? Is there a replacement carb/intake p...

Re: 88 SB50P - Low Power, 16 mph top speed

I am pretty sure I found a big part problem. Did a compression test with engine cold...90 psi. I think I remember reading that this should be more like 120 psi. I ordered a new piston/cylinder and we’ll see how much that helps. I cooked the exhaust on the grill for a few hours as well. It smoked a l...

Re: 88 SB50P - Low Power, 16 mph top speed

Thanks for your reply. I was sure that this performance was way below what it should be and having someone else agree makes it easier to justify putting more money into this. I intend to start with cleaning the exhaust and oiling the air filter and we’ll see what happens.

88 SB50P - Low Power, 16 mph top speed

I’ve got a 1988 SB50P with little to no power. I weigh about 220 lb and I can only go about 16 mph on flat ground. If there is even a slight incline that drops to ten, and I have to push it up hills steeper than a slight grade. Is this typical? If not, where do I start troubleshooting? Another sympt...
