Re: Bought a 87 Honda Elite 50 (non running) - where to begin?

Cork crankase gasket seems to have worked. Kick hangs up just ever so slightly on return sometimes (gentle toe nudge gets it all the way back), but starts scooter just fine. The washers were probably about 1 mm or so thicker than the cork, I would guess...but overall, gasket much preferable to havin...

Re: Bought a 87 Honda Elite 50 (non running) - where to begin?

Cool, took crankcase apart to make my gasket today. Belt actually looks new-ish... ordered a new one anyways (wasn't particularly expensive), will have a backup I guess. I also adjusted the rear brake...lever was very "soft". Took the rear brake housing apart and did a visual inspection. S...

Re: Bought a 87 Honda Elite 50 (non running) - where to begin?

So, if the scooter seems a little sluggish to get going on initial acceleration, would the new belt help on that?

Re: Bought a 87 Honda Elite 50 (non running) - where to begin?

Sorry to have gone dark - been variously sick & busy. I can't believe what I'm about to type...I just rode the damned thing around the block tonight!!! I owe you guys a ton, what a great feeling! This might seem like a small achievement and, in the grand scheme of things, it certainly is, but it...

Interesting, I'll give that a try and report back - thanks!

Re: Bought a 87 Honda Elite 50 (non running) - where to begin?

Thanks again. Lubed it up pretty thoroughly, kicks through perhaps a little smoother, but still sticks. Very frustrating because the behavior is so repeatable and predictable, but for the life of me I can't mentally visualize what might be happening internally to account for it. Makes me wish I coul...

Re: Bought a 87 Honda Elite 50 (non running) - where to begin?

Sorry, didn't see your follow up post till just now - a little lube would have occurred to most, but not me! Sick as a dog the last couple days, so I might not get to it for another day or so, but eager to give it a spin. I reckon I should also be on the hunt for a new crank case gasket, eh? There w...

Re: Bought a 87 Honda Elite 50 (non running) - where to begin?

Thanks for the info, I'll pull the starter when I get a chance.

As far as your other advice, are you saying you think I need a new drive face?

Re: Bought a 87 Honda Elite 50 (non running) - where to begin?

One small bit of progress though - I have confirmed the starter as toast. All the parts seem to move freely, but when I hit the start button (with the bendix uninstalled) it doesn't do squat. Should be a relatively easy fix, I would think. Case is all reassembled for the second time. Finally got the...

Re: Bought a 87 Honda Elite 50 (non running) - where to begin?

I have the case back off an disassembled, everything seems to look good (trying to figure out how to post pics, I have a couple snaps of the components). The main thing I'm running into is the spring seems to really want to "climb" as I try to reinstall it (i.e. it sits down in that channe...

Re: Bought a 87 Honda Elite 50 (non running) - where to begin?

Thanks for the feedback - got the cover off pretty easily and poked around a bit to familiarize with how things work in there. That half-moon gear hooked up to the kick is weird, man! At first glance, it looks obviously like it's got some worn/broken teeth, but looking close at the service manual an...

Re: Bought a 87 Honda Elite 50 (non running) - where to begin?

Sorry, I was wrong - I have to manually advance the engine (i.e. turn the fan) and then the kick will work again.

Re: Bought a 87 Honda Elite 50 (non running) - where to begin?

Cool, thanks! I'll poke around a bit at the starter. I had some help over the phone from a scooter-guru buddy and have been able to verify I am getting spark. The kick start will kick a couple times, then seize up. If I wait a bit, I can kick it a time or two before it seizes up again. I suspect thi...

Re: Bought a 87 Honda Elite 50 (non running) - where to begin?

Thanks for the reply, reassuring to not feel quite so alone! :) Yeah, wish I had more information - the kid I bought it from is an "intermediate owner", meaning he bought it non-running from the previous owners (who could not get it started). The (nervous) thought that someone else (or mul...
