Cork crankase gasket seems to have worked. Kick hangs up just ever so slightly on return sometimes (gentle toe nudge gets it all the way back), but starts scooter just fine. Sorry, I was wrong - I have to manually advance the engine (i.e. turn the fan) and then the kick will work again.
