Success

Thanks all,
The slightest tap with rubber mallet was all it needed. Thanks for your help. I don't care how anyone spells as long as it conveys useful information.

Removing Cylinder

I think I need a ring job. I took off the cylinder head according to the factory manual, but when I tried to take off the cylinder itself, it would not budge. I didn't want to pull on it with all my might, but I wasn't sure if there was a preferred method. Once the head (and the four long screws) ar...

Head Gasket Installation

I did the de-carbonization routine per the tech doc. Now I'm putting it all back together and I have the new head gasket as recommended, but I'm not sure if there is any difference in how I put it on. There is a little double ridge that is obviously designed to be squashed flat when the screws are t...

Compression Tester

Ok, I got the compression tester and hooked it up. I'm not ashamed to say that I'm not sure what I'm doing. I hit the electric starter and watched the guage. It rapidly bounced back and forth between 60 psi and 130 psi, and then after about eight seconds, it just stopped still at 130 psi. I think th...

Throttle adjustment

Thanks Mormonmopedmaifa, but I can't find anything that matches that description. You say there's an "idle screw up near the throttle handle" and that "it looks like a real long hex nut." Can you give me any more details on the description/location. When I look under the throttle...

Some answers, though not all yet... The throttle seems to be a problem. I don't understand it. When I remove the throttle assembly from the top of the carb, then, the throttle control works through its full range. In other words, if I let go, then it closes fully and then as I turn it, the spring gr...

Compression?

OK, I took off the spark plug, stuck my finger in the hole and cranked. The result is that my finger is sucked into the hole somewhat then released (neutral) and this happens once for each "crank" that I hear in the starter motor. I felt no compression at all. It was clearly a vacuum sucki...

No vacuum when cranking

Well guys, I've cleaned this carb for many hours. It is very clean. Even the idle jet is very clean--I can see a clear small light through it. Still, the thing won't start. It will only start when I squirt fuel in from the top. So, I'm thinking why won't the fuel go from the bowl up the jets into th...

Choke Test

How do I check to see if the choke mechanism is working? I removed the choke mechanism from the top of the carb, and then hit the electric starter a few seconds. I figured that choke worked by retracting the needle up a bit when the choke was engaged. Is this not true? Unfortunately, my choke did no...

Oily Spark Plug

My spark plug I changed out for a new one when I got the thing. Since I never actually got it truly started, I figured the brand new spark plug had to be good. However, I checked it anyway and guess what--it's all full of oil. There's also some oily gunk built up on it. What does that mean?

How much light through idle jet?

Ok, I've cleaned the carb yet again. I think this may be a unique idea. I tried just blasting the jet with the directed carb spray going through the little red straw, but much of the spray splattered all over. So, I actually used the drain hose from the carb, attached it to the idle jet, then squash...

Plugged Idle Jet

OK, Noiseguy. I'm starting to think you're right. Took the carb apart again. I can see light through two jets--the main jet and the choke jet (I don't know if those are the real names). There is a little jet about a centimeter from the main jet. I don't know where it's supposed to lead. Am I suppose...

Petcock supplier?

OK, I went ahead and rebuilt the carburetor. I even bought the kit with the gaskets. I figured that was cheaper than the petcock, so I ought to try it first. It was a bit dirty, but no big deal. I reinstalled it and there is no change at all. So, I'm convinced now it's the petcock. Can't be anything...

bad petcock

Sorry about the ambiguous post. Yes, I meant nothing was going through the petcock. I took it off and filled it up with carb cleaner from the top of the thing and none of the carb cleaner went through the petcock to the bottom. Then I poked through the puddle and there was what seemed to be a spring...

Fuel Petcock

I took off the fuel petcock and nearly nothing goes through it. Is there a way to recondition it somehow, or do I just have to find a new one somewhere?
