Re: Can't climb / go up even slight hills - Elite SB50 1989(?) - Clutch / belt issues

Greetings: It is still not clear that the outer sheave of the Drive Face is fully seated in its correct position. However since the symptom improved, I suspect the cover gasket might for some reason be compressed too much. Consider this: 1. Loosen the cover bolts a little bit to finger-tight. 2. Sta...

Re: Need help buying motorcycle earplugs.

Greetings: The wind noise inside even a properly-fitted helmet has been measured and found to reach damaging levels. Longer rides at higher speed of course increase the risk. Industrial Safety Supply stores carry dozens of brands and designs of earplugs. They're dirt-cheap, so buy a variety and expe...

Re: Centrifugal clutch

Greetings: The big coil spring forcing the pulleys together (the one behind the clutch), if broken, would result in a free-wheeling engine unable to transmit power to the gearbox and rear wheel. A broken CLUTCH spring - the three that pull the shoes to center - would result in a clutch that fails to...

Re: Stumped

Greetings: It sounds like the carb bowl is overfilling. The level is controlled by a float/needle valve, the rubber-tipped needle of which is known to fail after time. 34 years is a lot of time... Anyway the engine is inhaling liquid gasoline instead of carefully blended vapor. Find a float needle a...

Re: Centrifugal clutch

Greetings: No direct adjustability beyond altering the weights of the "legs" and the strength of the springs. If you dismantle the assembly entirely, it is possible to grind a few grams off the pivoting shoes for a higher stall speed. Some on this Forum report that springs from certain years of Yama...

Re: How do you get that oil pump plug working?

Greetings: O-rings come in different thicknesses as well as diameters. Perhaps it was bad luck on the original, not "square" when you pushed it in, or a sharp edge on your crankcase. After that maybe replacements are too thick to fit? Measure the pump bore and the plug diameters. Lawn irrigation sup...

Re: Can't climb / go up even slight hills - Elite SB50 1989(?) - Clutch / belt issues

Greetings: If you loop the belt around the crank end, then squeeze the upper and lower courses of the belt together it puts enough tension against the spring so that your other hand can pull them apart. Once the belt is wedged in there, it tends to stay put and keep the rear sheaves apart unless you...

Re: Can't climb / go up even slight hills - Elite SB50 1989(?) - Clutch / belt issues

Greetings: Sounds like the kicker cover assembly is crowding the Drive Face. There are two reasons that come to mind; 1. You omitted the cover gasket, which is factored into the clearances needed for the kicker to engage and then disengage. Make sure you have a thickness of about 0.8mm or the cover ...

Re: 86 Aero AF05E Mild Performance Increase

Greetings:

Harleyracer gave great tips, but to the best of my knowledge a ZX pulley cannot be used on an 05 block. The cranknstem is too short for the wider 18mm belt.

Re: Low Compression on Spree

The rising piston compresses the air that was in the crankcase. Any amount pushed out a bad seal will affect compression. Hold throttle wide open for accurate value. Take off belt cover and look for oil in belt cavity.

Greetings:

@ 3600 miles, the exhaust is probably ok. The Keli will help the flat spot in midrange. 65cc cylinders for SE05 are getting scarce, but by far the best way to go. Top speed will be limited by lack of gears more than anything. Welcome and read all you can here.

Re: How do you get that oil pump plug working?

Greetings: Meatball, that's one heckuva good plug design. I almost wish my conventional plug would leak so I could get one! I don't recall having any trouble with the single o-ring on mine, but it did take some caution - keeping the plug square as I pushed it down - but go in it did, and hasn't leak...

Re: looking for a starter spindal

Greetings: Your "dealer" should know better, but the Spree hasn't been sold since 1987, so he doesn't. Let's see, put the bike away last fall and by some Magic Evil Gremlin mischief, both the electric starter motor AND the kickstart spindle mysteriously boinked? The Motor and Spreezer are almost cer...

Greetings:

What do they look like?
I've often considered replacing the ungainly rack, especially since I have the JDM tail light assembly on Flash, but that rack can come in handy for parcel-mailing trips. I wish the stock rack wasn't so Fugly.

Re: 1986 Honda spree won’t start

Greetings:

Check both ends of the crank for bad seals. If the rings and piston were installed correctly you should have compression Way better than 80, unless it's blowing out the sides.
