It looks to me like something got sucked up into the cylinder through the transfer port and hung on to the side of the piston on the way up. You better find out what it was. You can't run that like it is.

when installed the throttle needle goes all the way through carb, and seats on main jet, so I think its installed ok, throttle actuates, and cable seem free, and clear. why does it die when I hit the brake? It sounds like somebody "worked on" that scooted, then decided it was time for som...

Try using the magic marker trick to measure belt travel on both the variator and opposing drive pulley. Put lines on the inner and outer area with a magic marker. The belt will wear off the area it travels in. Then replace any parts that are suspect.
