Throwaway Petcocks
Greetings: My vacuum petcock sat in the Previous Owner's garage untouched for 7 years. A considerable quantity of fuel evaporated into Amber, coating the tank, valve lines and carb with a challenging material to remove. A full week soaking in a can of Napa Carb Cleaner- the gallon with the little ba...

In and Out Idle Mixture Screw
Greetings: I've heard this called the "Air Screw" a lot, perhaps incorrectly. Which direction is Lean/Rich. In/Out? Since ithe tip is in a fuel passage, I'm thinking if you block that passage by turning the screw clockwise and in, you lean the mixture. Opening it up (counter-CW and out) yo...

'87 Aero Transformed - Please Excuse Photo Quality
Greetings: Just thought I'd post a couple of pictures of The Transformation. The kit is a Polini Contesta 47mm Piston/Cylinder kit. It came with all the gaskets and an unmarked main jet. I'm suspicious it's too small - will monitor. I pulled the power unit from the frame so I could work in the comfo...

Bearings
Greetings:
Check what you can from topside. Crank at top; jiggle the rod. It should not move side-to-side more than a mm or so. There should be NO play up&down. If there is, split the cases and see why. If it's OK, proceed with another wash & lube. I'm hoping it's OK.

The Ostrich Principal of Home Mechanics
Greetings:
Do you buy that? Good bearings usually spin freely, wet or dry. Seems a shame to do all that work only to have to start over. Think it over.

Greetings:
Splitting the cases is indicated. Doing so requires special tools, precision measuring devices, lots of time and for amateurs like ourselves, courage.

Polini + Keli + 1000 RPM Center Spring
Greetings: Pics tomorrow. Started immediately. Runs smoothly & well.Feels uncomfortably revvy for break-in. Keli wts. are 8s (I think...) Tan they are. Like Yoda I speak. :) Q1: To what exactly does the "1000"-RPM spring designation refer? Q2: Does this combination sound like a good ma...

Greetings: This forum is the best. I learned more in 6 weeks than I thought I'd ever want to know about these feisty endearing and occasionally frustrating little bikes. Now I just want to learn more! What is it about Honda-san's brainchild? On all the bikes I have owned, a failure to flash indicate...

Rev Limiter?
Greetings:
Sounds like what my Sportster does as I approach the 6800 RPM "last call". Waaanh-brp-brp-Waaanh-brp-brp... Could your electronic issue be Honda-san's intention? Putting it another way, does the state of Iowa mean anything to you?

Engine Removal
Greetings: It took me under an hour last night, on the first try. Included cleaning a lot of crud prior to cylinder surgery. 6 or 7 wires, airbox, throttle, hose lines, rear brake - no tools necessary for that one! - muffler - probably could have left it on but it almost removed itself riding home l...

Same thing when it went back in. it was REALY tight and still is! It wont slide at all from side to side. Tight is good in many situations. Here i...

WHining Noise
Greetings: Is the sound like that of an electric motor dipped in crack cocaine? Or is it more like "Honey, I'm begging you, put the seat back down." Get an 8mm wrench or socket. Look at the left side of your engine assembly. Take off all the bolts holding the long cover with the rounded en...

Seizures
Greetings: I had a hard seize riding my 90cc Kawasaki in 1974, going about 50 in a curve. The bike sputtered once (clue...) then the back tire just locked up! Suddenly sideways, I'm doing on pavement what Jay Springsteen does on dirt. And I'm no Jay Springsteen. Fortunately for me my dirt-riding exp...

Twisting Pistons
Greetings; I concluded last night that what was happening was that as I rotated the piston, it moved freely until the rings snagged their locating pins. It would then turn (I did not force matters) but much more resistant because the friction of the rings in the cylinder was much greater than that o...
