Re: Just picked up a Spree

I like a Spree because it only weigh about 75lbs and mine fits in the trunk of my car. Otherwise there's nothing much to like about them. The headlight alone costs as much as a new engine! If I had my druthers, I'd ruther have a monkey bike.

How do you check a bystarter with a vacuum pump? I always use a 12v battery

One of the nicest features of a Spree is you can take it into your home and warm it up. A piece of garden hose on the exhaust will carry the smoke outside. Heck, you can even take it to bed with you :-)

I, too, am thinking it could be the bystarter (electric choke). They have to be checked quite carefully, including the wires & connections.

Re: Belt sizes

You're right - my mistake on the numbers. I found in my junk pile a stock Yuandi belt with the size printed right on it: "642 15.5 30" The Honda Bando & Malossi belts don't have anything useful printed on them. So a "660 15.5 30" might get me the extra length I'm wanting with...

Belt sizes

I'm trying to find a belt that's slightly longer than my stock 660mm Honda Dio/Elite belt, but the vendors are not sure how to find the length in their catalogs. Most belt vendors don't list the length. I'm looking for something around 680mm. I found 680mm Malossi belts but at $55 they're way too ex...

Re: Is a starter "rebuildable" ?

Agree with others. The bendix can get jammed full of belt dust, so full it stops working. If it's something else in the hardware, the motor part of the assembly can be found on eBay for less than $50. They're not expensive. Look here: http://motors.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_kw=honda&_kw=caltric&...

Re: To big bore or not to big bore... That is the question

What BBK is the best bang for the buck? I like a BBK for the extra takeoff and the additional power when going up long hills. They're not expensive (approx $75), but they do need some other extras to get the best bang for the buck. Most BBKs have a bigger 32mm exhaust pipe which means your stock ex...

Re: Noob in need of help.. 87 Elite 50 S Leaking oil like a

Don't remove the oil pump. It's useful and does a good job, and your engine will last a whole lot longer with it than without it. Running without an oil pump is like going back 75 years in history. It comes out with one screw, so take it off and check for a loose connection. You might have to remove...

Re: Locked rear wheel

To undo the rear wheel nut, I just stick a piece of 2x4 through the wheel and apply a long-handle torque wrench to the nut with my foot. That 's usually quicker than getting out the impact wrench.

Re: Honda Elite ch80 1985 starter clutch?

It's easy enough to check the starter by removing the drive cover. You're just checking that the bendix mechanism works OK and flings the toothed gear forward until it engages the larger ring gear. You can see/hear if it's doing what it's supposed to do by just touching the starter switch (no more t...

I just buy the single VW Beetle exhaust gaskets for my 50mm Ruima jug. They're only $2 each.

Any big-city motorcycle repair shop can make custom cables. They do it all the time since cables for older bikes are often out-of-production

Re: Spree Trouble KickstucK!

Good job! This is a basic maintenance item on all scooters. The kick starter gets gummed up with rubber/asbestos dust and kevlar crud from the belt and clutch. It makes a horrible sticky mess that has to be cleaned up every 5000 miles or so. The gasket isn't too terribly important unless you're ridi...

Re: Stripped splines on drive pulley

As others have suggested, the cheapest and strongest repair would be to TIG weld a new gear to the shaft. Maybe your welder could replace the broken tooth if he's really handy with the welder and a grinder, and you could make do with the existing gear. It shouldn't cost more than $30 or $40. This re...
