If you're going to keep that filter in there and ride it (I wouldn't), at least check the plug out every once in awhile and dont hold it WOT very long, if at all.

I just paid $675 for my '01 with 3500 miles.

$800 is pretty darn steep if you ask me. I see 94+ Elite 50's listed for $500-$750 around here all the time.
