Did any 1986 Sprees have just electric start?

Did any 1986 Sprees have just electric start?

Post by thadpk »

I was under the belief that the only sprees that did not have a kickstart were 84-85 Sprees. I just looked at an 86 that had a vin that matched an 86 and it had no kickstart. My thought is that the engine at some time may have been switched. Or were there a few 86 that had no kickstart?

All Sprees had electric starters. The 1986 and 1987 had kick starters along with the electric starter.

So would all 1986 models have a kickstart then?

I understand that 86 and 87 Sprees had kickstart and electric start. My question was that if ALL 86-87 Sprees had the kickstart and if there was a special option to get an 86 sans kickstart. Thank you :)

thadpk,

No, Honda did not offer a sans-kickstart "option" for the 86's and 87's.

my guess is you are right; either someone has swapped in an 84 -'85 engine in your '86 Spree, or possibly your '86 had a broken kickstart mechanism (or broken belt housing) and someone put an '84 - '85 belt cover on.
You could check this hypothesis by removing your non-kickstart belt cover to see if the drive pulley (on crank) has the small "splines" around the perimiter of the crank nut; that would mean you do in fact have an '86 engine, with an '84 - '85 belt cover. Just an idea -
