Just a quick tip on how to install grips.

The place to discuss rides, accessories, or whatever is tangentially Spree/Elite-related

Just a quick tip on how to install grips.

Post by eclark5483 »

So I was doing a quick search on the forum here to identify the correct grip size for my Spree (7/8" & 1"), and I was reading some of the comments with people arguing various ways to get them installed. Saw graphite, grease (wow really?), this compound, that gel, etc, etc etc.. It was so sad, I almost burst out laughing.

So, since I have done this procedure literally thousands of times at the Polaris Spirit Lake assembly plant where time is of the essence when you have other stuff to get done on the bike, I thought I'd share a VERY VERY simple pro tip on how we get those buggers on.

RUBBING ALCOHOL

Just pour some down into the grip, give it a couple turns so that it's coated all over the inside, then pop it on.

Works great when doing the foot rests as well. The alcohol makes an excellent lubricant, and will quickly evaporate. It leaves no mess, and no risk of damaging the rubber with petroleum based products, and best of all... IT'S REALLY REALLY CHEAP.

Yep. Glass cleaner works well too; the kind that comes in a can and sprays out foamy. Put some on bar and in grip, slide on.

Both this, and rubbing alcohol, evaporate, unlike grease and dish soap, and once it's evaporated the grip sticks in place.

Now the question is, how do you get the old ones off?

If you don't plan on using them again, get a utility blade, carefully cut the length of it, then peel it off.

I've used compressed air, cooking oil and a slim screwdriver to work around it until it slips off. Usually easier to just cut it off as suggested and replace w/new one.

Loose grips sink ships.

If you want to reuse the grips, you can put a screwdriver underneath them, pry up a bit. Shoot glass cleaner (rubbing alcohol would probably work) into the gap. Do this, then twist grip back and forth. It will slowly break loose, then you can pop it off.

Foam grips you usually have to cut off.
