89 elite e
I have a 89 Elite 50. Overall good shape 1100 miles. Sat for ever. Cleaned carb and Spark is weak, is there something I should check? easy fix? If not I might just part it out. 125PSI in jug. complete bike... Any suggestions?

He used a spark-o-meter and the gauge went to frowny face
These things are so simple you could train Monkeys to work on them. Diagnosing an issue sometimes proves to be a larger hurdle. Once you find the problem I can assure you that the repair will most certainly be......an easy fix.4chevys4me wrote:easy fix?

Re: 89 elite e
well I'm no stranger to small engines and motorcycles.. I have plenty of compression and I put some fuel in the cylinder NOTHING.. Only thing I'm unsure of is the electronic choke? I'm wondering if this is common after sitting for 6+ yrs. I've just started tinkering with it. Spark just looks weak compared to other small engines I'v worked on. Any thoughts?
Thank you
Thank you

Re: 89 elite e
I'm still chasing the problem with my 1990 Elite E
So far:
checked for spark
rebuilt carb
checked compression (130)
looked inside cylinder with a camera
attached airbox and filter
new exhaust gasket and proper muffler
replaced battery
added fresh fuel and oil
I'll be pulling the drive pulley assembly off next and checking the crankcase seal. If that doesnt get it done, I may be going down the part it out path as well. Unfortunately that would mean selling the engine assembly and body plastics, then putting the rest in the trash as these SB50's dont seem to sell as well as the Sprees or Se50s, and Sa50s.

Test the bystarter if you suspect it to be an issue. However, it should still start if the bystarter is stuck if you hold the throttle....it just wont cold idle by itself.
If its been sitting 6yrs you should clean the carb AGAIN and then once more for fun. http://hondaspree.net/wiki/index.php5?t ... ture_Guide
Install a NEW air filter, battery, spark plug, fresh gas and oil. All of this should only cost about $30-$40 total.
Set mixture screw to factory setting as stated in the Service Manual which is 1 3/8 turns out for the 88' Elite 50 http://hondaspree.net/wiki/index.php5?t ... ture_Guide

You put gas in cylinder and no pop?
Check blocked up exhaust. That, or no spark, is the only thing that would create a no-fire situation.

Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner!!! Exhaust was plugged. No muffler and she started right up. Whats the best way to clear the muffler??
Re: 89 elite e
Plugging typically caused by either oil residue or insect colonization.4chevys4me wrote: Exhaust was plugged. Whats the best way to clear the muffler??
Bonfire the pipe if oil-choked. Wikispreedia guides you.
Mud-packed by flying stingers ?..it happens plenty. Probe and shake has worked for me when the plug is near the outlet. ...............................................................................................................

I used Seafoam, degreaser, and I little gas. Broke up everything nicely within an hour or so. Blowing it out with compressed air and should be off to the races soon.
Thx for the help

Re: 89 elite e
Glad I read this. I'll look into that too. Can a plugged up exhaust cause the problem I'm having with oil/fuel mixture being pushed past the crankcase seal and out into the side cover?
Re: 89 elite e
Maybe it needs a new seal ?
