Spree - How fast is too fast?

Post by GIJoeBob »

My Spree is running better than ever now. It used to top out around 28 but now it is around 32 and sometimes it gets up to around 35. Once or twice it went past 35 and was screaming like a jet engine at which point I backed it down.

Just how fast is too fast for these little bikes?

The limit with stock gearing is the engine rpm. I've had mine up to between 11,000 and 12,000 rpm. Stock the engine speed at 25 is about 8,000 rpm. If you are running at the higher rpm make sure and check your jetting. Go up step at a time with the main jet till it starts four stroking then back off one. If you can pull the higher revs it's time to look into a 1/2" belt, pulley mod, or bigger rear tire. That will push the rpm down and raise the speed.

too lean? They really do scream before the piston is blown out the exhaust as a liquid.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

I hit 40mph on my 86 spree before the engine backfired, a huge stream of fire came out the back, and then my petcock broke.

need to find a new one or create a vacuum shut off.

40 mph is about 12,000 rpm. The Spree engine is speced for 8,000. They seem to handle 10,000 with a proper exhaust. It looks like they run lean or at least hot with a drilled stock pipe at high rpm. That flame was molten aluminum from the piston?
