SA50 and 12:1; What Was Honda-San Thinking?

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

My introduction to Flash III is ongoing. First impressions were how tight and together everything feels compared to my 4000 mile Aero. No buzzes, no slop. Really sprightly off the line - threatens to wheelie with ham-fisted throttle hand, but geared way too low. I'm not flogging it out just yet with 45 miles on the odometer, but looks like top speed will be around 40 with stock tire. The engine certainly has the power to go at least 10:1.

You too? My Elite SR with 50mm jug doesn't just threaten to wheelie, it has shot out out from under me. Does it more uphill than downhill... ??? However I think part of my problem is I have to give it some throttle just to get it to go, and when it does, it's launch time. Pulled cover today and belt measures 14.3mm. Time to change? Hoping it tones down the launch. Might have to report in to NASA.

Unless you're looking to haul a lot of weight or to do stunts, I'd recommend moving away from stock gearing.

So I'm back on the learning curve. :? What tools are required to do a gear change?

As far as hauling weight, since plastic is so terrible I've considered ratting it out and using it for hunting, and might need to drag out a deer. I do have a tote cart needing a trailer hitch invention.

8mm sockets for trans cover
large socket to remove wheel
large press, 20ton recommended. assuming replacing secondary gear set. no press needed to replace primary

need to replace plastic washer with thinner one too

then reassemble
projects galore :nerd:

That's pretty much what I had surmised. Sounds easy enough except for the press. Not sure who in this one horse town would have one.

He won't keep his feet still in one place long enough. :?

We're not really that much of a one horse town. We gotta traffic light now. It took Walmart building a Superstore on the highway, but we got one.

I'll check the parts store. Sometimes they do presswork, at least in bigger cities they do.

Greetings:

Both the Polini and Malossi variators improved things considerably, despite the cripplingly low 12:1 mechanical ratio. Larger (OK, like a tiny bit larger...) drive face diameters and better progression yielded a quick sprint to an indicated 45-ish. No chance to wind it out for very long, but I expect the top speed to approach 50 indicated. The Malossi worked better in the higher-revving AF05 on Flash II, but the strokier, torquier AF16 in III seems to like the Polini variator better. Stock weights are 8.5 and it uses them to full advantage with a "meaty" midrange.

Malossi vario - nearly new - is on eBay now,

along with a lot of other Aero stuff.
