I can pretty much feel safe in saying the aprilia rs50's that are fuel injected are tops in my book. if tuned right i hear they can do close to 60 on the stock 50cc.

RS50? i only know of one Aprilia RS 50 and it was a weed eater on wheels. i had one.
no fuel injection there.

your referring to a Scooter though- right?

what i was asking was not so much what's fastest stock but what was the one 50cc scooter that the tuner companies make performance parts for.

sorry it was SR50 not RS50. old ones were carbed, new ones are made under piagio if i remember correctly, these are fuel injected, and are heavily restricted usually from the dealership. however now that i realize what i have said, this is not 2 stroke...
that being said, zuma engines have a huge aftermarket and can be made to be pretty quick.

Sometime in the late 80s, Yamaha partnered with the European scootermaker Minarelli, which had fallen on hard times, to build engines for its small-displacement 2-strokes. The engines are well-engineered, over-built, and thus ideal for hi-po mods. Because they stuck with the same basic design over the years, lots of Aftermarket companies sprang up to fill the go-somewhat-faster demand. The other thing is that the kits for the Minarelli evidently fit allthe Minarellis. You don't have the design changes that make the exhaust right for >1994, wrong for 1993, etc., that Honda incurred. From my own reading, there are a ton of cylinder, pipe, gear choices that simply don't exist for Honda in the same variety.

The fact that you can still buy a brand new 2-stroke in 2009 (albeit a heavy 200+ pound Zuma) speaks to the ongoing attention paid by Yamaha/Minarelli to the issue of emissions. Yamaha built its reputation around reliable, fast 2-strokes in the 60s. Honda was always about 4-strokes until they saw the market for the cheaper-to-produce 2-cycle bikes in 1983 with the Grand-Daddy Aero. (Note to Forum that the first Honda smoker wasn't the Spree, with all due respect...) Unlike Honda, which was pushed out when US EPA rules tightened, Yamaha has so far been unwilling to let go of their smoker tradition.

Dio platform is best in my book. Huge selection of parts, availability, ease of tuning

Jog style comes in second, but pricier and some parts harder to get, tuning can be trickier

Are you referring to the AF16E often called Dio, or the AF18E true Dio?

if looking for the ultimate then I say the Aprilia RS50, but if you are limited on money, then the AF16E is the way to go.

I think the 1983 Aero was a case where the commercial market found Honda. It was not the first cheap 2 stroke by Honda. In the US, Honda was refining 2 strokes at least from the Express in 1977. Later versions of the Express introduced the CDI. The 1981 Express SR has several definitive features - 1st with 12v electrics, electric start, variator (prior models has 2 speed automatic clutch transmissions), and 3 spoke 10" wheels (Aero/Spree/Elite just carried these on!). Styling had a hint of leg shield and floorboard instead of pegs that would ripen to the Aero design. The Urban Express (1982) is a unique chopper styled 2 stroke scooter. Technologically, Aero in 1983 I think was the first Honda scooter in the US with a bystarter and anti-dive front suspension.

Yamaha Jog motors are incredible, they are light years ahead of the Honda DIO 2 stroke engines. DIO engines aren't true crossflow designs which in itself is a huge handicap. Tuned 90cc JOGs are a very good match up for 125cc DIOs.

let us refine the criteria of the platform-

stockish appearance
street legal- lights turnsignals and a mirror
X amount of money spent on modifications- say, as a baseline- 500 dollars.starting from factory stock as delivered from manf.

still Dio?
