There is a law in FL that all unleaded should contain 10% ethanol. In North Dakota i felt like it was higher.

Bear will chime in about how it burns hotter and tears things up, but you just have to live and let burn.

Can using a different additive help offset this?

Actually alcohol burns cooler and a lot slower than gas and that is why you rarely see an alcohol race motor burn itself down. It is also why the petroleum industry are using it to boost the octane of their junk gas.

Here in Washington, if there is 10% or more of alcohol then they must post it on the pump. It is a fact of life and we just have to live with it. 99% of fuel additives just cost you money and do nothing at best and cause problems a lot of the time.

I don't know about you guys, but all the gas stations here that are near a boat harbor have 1 designated "non-ethanol" pump. The boats can't handle it. It's all I run in my bike, mainly because it can sit for a few weeks better than the other stuff.

Boats have enough issues with fuel WITHOUT alcohol. Alcohol is like a sponge and sucks water out of the air and the more water (humidity) in the air the more it sucks. That's why anyone who has a boat needs to run a water fuel separator type fuel filter.

I've noticed 10% stickers on BP pumps for years now. Most other stations around here don't add the eth of death, or they're using ultra-fine print on the bottom of the pumps.

just look up on google about ethanol damage to boats. we are having a tuff time in the marine world right now with hoses and o-rings- they are just falling apart. I could talk for days about the problems with marine engines and the money it's costing the industry. here are some pics:

a lined marine fuel hose starting to turn:

the liner after it soaks it all up:

The industry has addressed the alcohol issue with hoses, "o"rings and other fuel system gaskets, etc. Anything newer than about 2000 will not have these issues. New replacement parts are alcohol resistant. Alcohol is evil in the fuel tank, causes rust and other corrosion. I've seen cast carb parts have holes eaten in them.

actually the main problem is the boat side of everything. the riggers use any kind of hose they can. but, there are a pile of lawsuits on etec motors as little as a year old. BRP wasnt ready it appears. so all the factory hoses on these scooters, carbs, tanks, intake o-rings and seals- its gonna be trouble just like everything else.

Serves BRP right. When they picked up OMC thru the bankruptcy (Johnson & Evinrude and OMC stern drives), their first act was to announce that all previous customer was on their own, no warranties or parts for that matter and not only that but dealers were no longer dealers and had to apply to become a dealer. With that attitude toward customers and the dealers they deserve anything bad that happens to thos arrogant French/Canadians.
