One loose nut. Lots of broken parts.

Post by Trafficjamz »

So I was playing around with transmission tuning today and forgot to tighten the clutch bell nut.

Well, the clutch bell nut fell off

the clutch bell fell off

the clutch pucks and springs shot out all over the road

One hit the kicker cover and broke that

Another shot out and smashed the OKO carb bowl to pieces

the third clutch puck whizzed past my head and landed about 50 yards away! :surprise:

Moral of this story: Make sure your nuts are tight before going on a ride. :thumbwink:

You know I have to do this, don't you?

Oh and I know all about leaving stuff loose and loosing it. Once forgot to tighten a propeller and lost it on the race course, $900 gone and it was my best one too. Image

I will show some pictures of the carnage tomorrow. It is bad.

The 24mm oko carb shattered! Gas went everywhere. I am luck none of the fling debris hit me.

:nervous: YIKES! A clutch puck that can destroy metal could have done some serious damage to soft tissue!

This does bring up an interesting point though, with so many doing the stand and twist way of holding the clutch together how do you get it torqued to specs with basic home tool kits. I personally have always done the high precision rata-tat-tat with my impact gun and haven't stripped threads or lost my nuts yet, but it is very imperfect for regular use or clutch tuning more than once a year.

Strap wrench to hold the bell or as Honda suggests the univeral holder 08825-0030000 (actually any pinned holder will work while you torque the nut.

Then again in my lowly opinion this isyour best pet and it is worth buying one if you are gonna do clutch tunning.

Greetings:

Thanks for sharing. It's embarassing, but you obviously are willing to take some ribbing to help the Team. My compliments. I'll make sure my nuts are tight before every ride.

It was not a matter of not tightening the nut enuff, but forgetting to do it a all.

And if the rear trans cover would have been in place, this also would not have happened.
