California registration process

Got a a Honda Canopy. Had a DMV bill of sale a Power of Attorny form and a Application for title. Do I just go straight to the CMV? Or I need to go CHP way to verify VINS. Anyone knows the fees involed. I'm in the sf bay area. Ended up getting it for $800. All I can say is fun fun fun.

I would go to CHP first and have the VINs verified then off to DMV (have fun in those lines). Sometimes like we have here at our main DMV they have CHP on site so its a one stop shop. Well kinda avg wait times are 3 hrs. Appointments are 2 months out. sheety

Believe it or not I transfered an elite 150cc 1987 and the wait was 5 minutes. It was a friday I guess the peeps didnt realize there was no more furlough fridays at he california offices anymore. You guys know how much they charge to check vins and dmv registration fees for something like the canopY?

Honda Gyro Canopy is a Japanese bike and you will not be able to get that bike registered in CA, unless you have a friend over there that can pull some strings or try to register it as a US Gyro.

Didn't realize it was a JDM scooter... Good luck on trying to register it. Hopefully you don't get somebody that's an * and they confiscate it or report you to the FED's and they will come get it. I know its a scooter but with cars they don't play around with JDM cars that are here, unless there 25 years or older, they confiscate them and either deport the car or crush it. Be very careful, TO BE honest with you I would first take the paper work into the DMV and see what they say. IF they ask where the scooter is tell them a friends house. Will see may be it will not be a problem at all cause it is a scooter, but I doubt it. And welcome to CALIFORNIA

Should I just send reg 230 dmv form thru the mail and get a moped plate instead?

Thats what I would do. It may take longer but most likely they will just push through any issues that may come up with the JDM title.

Just sent form 230 with $20 which is $2 more[tip]. Usually takes 2 months but at least I got paper and plates for it. Who'd stop a gyro ?

bad idea....
No working pedals, you will be pulled over
if they even give you plates at all.
It's all about money...moped plates are a one time reg
while scooters have to be reregistered every year.
You might get away with riding dirty, but for how long?

This is why I ride standup scoots. No reg/ins
CA DMV is a bunch of crooks.

But if he gets it into the system all he has to do then is go back to DMV and say he made a mistake its suppose to be a Scooter not a moped. That would be a easy change.

True, but the moped reg is a joke and is done off site
by mail only...because they don't care. It's barely even part
of the system.

The DMV will verify all the info you sent them and the Vin will check as a Japanese bike. What I would have done is use the US Gyro Vin on that.

I'm having big issues trying to register my 2009 Honda Ruckus that is a US bike and complies with EPA regulations so I guarantee that it will be extrememly hard trying to get that Canopy registered

When the mopedheads send their reg230 forms . They sure have a whole bunch of different brands of mopeds. They come from countries like India, Austria,Italy,Japan. Slovenia and others. Not sure if all those are USA sold or distributed mopeds but they still get the plates. I even got one before for an electric scooter.Took 2 months. Well I keep a copy of what I sent and even the copy of the check. Wish me luck.

It's like registering an 18 wheeler as a car.
Apples and oranges.
I have thought of a way around this for awhile,
and the only way I figured out how to add "operative pedals"
was very time consuming, and very destructive
to the original look.
I'm in El Cerrito, where in the Bay area are you?

Union City here. Hoping it goes well and at least have plates in a few. Doesn't go fast enough over 27mph.
