Looking for CHEAP simple mods for 86 Spree?

Post by VolvoJoe »

I just picked up a Spree off CL $400. The old man just dropped $300 into new tires, wiring, brakes and carb cleaning. Now my only issue is it tops out at 32MPH, and I want it go get closer to 40MPH. Please if you know any cheap easy mods let me know. I was thinking intake(what and where) then maybe exhaust. P.S. I have a extra exhaust and engine parts I also got off CL. Thank you

Not much to do cheaply with a Spree.
forum member Tazland001 sells big bore kits (BBK) for the Spree in 44mm & 48mm sizes.
You can get a new 48mm kit from this forum member to help him out:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17936

Or if that seems too much, maybe get my new 44mm kit & head (un-machined) and I will then upgrade into that 48mm. (You'd by my kit for $100 and I'd buy his kit for $155.)
Also, dig into the Performance Technical section of the forum here for pully mods and other Spree goodness.

Big bore kits do not increase top speed.
Gears increase top speed.
However, big bore kits are usually needed to push the taller gears.

Top 10 Cheap Speed Mods for Sprees
Warning the following list contains traces of sarcasm. Sarcasm is known to cause cancer in California.
1. Big Hills(going down)..........nothing makes a spree faster than good ol' gravity.
2. Windy days.........going with the wind can net a 2-3 mph increase.
3. Tuckin'/Duckin'.....Get your head/torso as low as possible.(to reduce wind resistance)
4. Get bigger tires! This will be like getting taller gears....without the tall gear price.
5. Pulley Mod......look it up......(Wears out belts prematurely and hurts acceleration)
6. Go on a Diet..........Money saved on food, can be used to buy some real performance parts.
7. Racing stripe/stickers........Makes your scooter seem faster, even when it is standing still.
8. Get a fatter drive belt ......works like the pulley mod (poorly)
9. Wax your scooter. Shiny = Fast :eyeroll:
10. Drill out the baffles in your exhaust. Loud = Fast

There's almost NOTHING you can do to speed up a Spree (as has been noted above). I found that even bigger tires don't make a bit of difference. Besides which, bigger tires require grinding out a piece of the center-stand for clearance, and then it needs welding to patch up the ground-out piece. Drilling out the muffler just makes it noisier, not faster. 32mph is just about all you'll ever get out of a Spree. I finally threw in the towel with my Spree, sold it for $350 and bought a $750 '98 Dio for which there's tons of speed parts that really work. I can easily squeeze 55mph on level ground out of my slightly modified Dio, and my old Spree is now serving as a pit bike at the drag races.

So does anyone know what the Big bore (44mm) kit adds to the Spree, as far as speed? Can I toss on any aftermarket air intake that fits?

You might gain a mph or two with the BBK. Your acceleration will be much better with the BBK. You can toss anything you want on it, it just depends how much tuning you want to do.

Hey Bear, I wasn't able to find Taz. I did a research on the members page and I didn't find him.
Am I not looking at the right place?
