Don't call me "h*****"

Post by noiseguy »

Guys: Wanted to quickly set expectations about a word that I've seen on the board a few times. h*****, which if you've ever been to HI, you've probably heard at one point or another.

A h***** means white guy; by definition someone not of Polynesian descent. The meaning and etymology is debatable, but I treat it like I would the term whitey, cracker, gringo, etc. It gets used as shorthand for mainlanders or tourists at times... if that's the case, just say that, it doesn't convey race.

This is a scooter board, not a treatise on race relations (or religion, or politics for that matter) Stick to the scooters and everything fine.

Thanks, NG

RE: Mr. noiseguy

THANK YOU, that's exactly what it means. It's meaning highly depends on its usage, NOT RACIST as some may people think. I have lots of cool "h*****" friends and even them knows. Some people do abuse the word sometimes. Aloha!

I don't think they mean it in a racist type of way, just another way of saying white dude. FYI "gringo" isn't racist either....

Brad, every time I've been called a gringo, it's been negative. It's another word that falls into unclear usage and meaning and relies on context... the problem (and advantage) with online communications is that context is limited: relationships and status are leveled, there's no body language or spacial context, etc. It's easier to offend and be offended. Limiting this language is just another way to set expectations on how we talk to each other.

I understand what you are saying Jason, but growing up very multi cultural environment I can say this:

Gringo is a word that I heard often. Guero or Guerito is another. Those words were used to describe a white guy, in a very similar way as h***** Im sure. Smiles came hand in hand when those words were used.

h***** literally means without breath. When the hawaiians first saw white people they thought they were gods. The pale skin of the white people made them believe thatt they were ghosts or immortals. You can use it in a few ways. It can be compared to the insult gringo but in most cases its not used in a bad way. It just depends on the context that it is used in. If your calling someone a stupid h***** then its bad. If your saying "me and my h***** friend went on a ride together" its diferent. I happen to be hallf white and half arabic but born and raised in hawaii so I would be a hapa h*****. That means I'm white on the outside but on the inside I'm a brown.
