Speed on my SB50P Elite

Post by bwhigham »

I just got my scooter running yesterday. I drove it around my block a few times and I am wondering why I can only get between 26-29 mph out of it? It starts to sputter at around 27 and I have to back off the throttle and starts to purr again.. when I adjusted the carb I turned the air fuel mix screw all the way in and backed it out 2 1/2 times...should I adjust in or out to get more air in the carb?

Here is the proofread version of what I typed above..
I just got my scooter running yesterday. I drove it around my block a few times and I am wondering why I can only get between 26-29 mph out of it? It starts to sputter at around 27 mph. When I give it full throttle it sputters, when i ease back on the throttle it starts to purr again. It sounds like it needs more air. When I adjusted the carb I turned the air/ fuel mix screw all the way in and backed it out 2 1/2 times...should I adjust in or out to get more air in the carb? How fast should these elite 50s run? Its all stock..
Thanks for any help?

The "P" model is the restricted model and that is all it is gonna do because it was built to do that.

What restricts the SP50P Elite E models? Is it the CDI module? If I replace the module with a different module, would it rev a little higher? I did open up the breather casing and I was able to get a solid 30-31 MPH...The speedometer reads 35..i would think that I should be able to get at least 35 mph out of it..

It is mechanically restricted. The exhaust is restricted and the carb has a smaller main jet in it. No US Honda scooter has a restricted CDI. Whatever the * a breather casing is (I suspect the air filter box), you are looking to burn a hole in the piston. Either derestrict it properly or you will destroy it.

IIRC isn't the ramp plate different in the P also?

If it is an '88 SB50P there is no ramp plate. Non-variated.

The p version has a different carb setup. The porting is different so the compression ratio, power, and top rpm are different. The exhaust pipe is different. All of the electronics are the same.

Carbs as originally produced were a different part number. However the replacement carb for both uses the same part number. The replacement does not have the main jet installed.

Cylinders are different part numbers.

Head is the same.

Piston and rings are the same.

The exhaust is different.

Yeah the air filter housing and filter..is what I was referring to as the breather. How can I properly unrestrict it? different exhaust and different main jet? And, please forgive me for asking something that seems obvious to you, I am new to this whole thing and have no prior experience.
Thanks for putting up with a newbie..

Messing with the air filter housing is a assured way to make you scooter run bad. These things are tuned from the inlet opening on the air box to the outlet tip of the exhaust pipe. This is a 2 stroke and they be temperamental, not like the 4 strokes found in cars.

Oh and you adjust the air mixture screw for the highest RPM possible, then you adjust the idle speed screw until the rear tire does not turn. The numbers given in the manual are a starting point only and the motor will start there, you have to adjust them correctly.
