Re: New member from France with a 1986 Aero 50
Well seems that only the USA are interested in these Hondas...apart from us two europeans!
Here are some pics of my other drives :
My Miss's 1200 Bandit
It's a 2005 MY and only 10000kms on the clock. Bought in 2007 in 1st hand with 6500 kms...we didn't use it much because my wife was pregnant a couple of months later.
Has been sitting for a while...I start it up and go for a ride with it sometimes.
My GSX 1400 which is confiscated at the moment ( )
2003 MY and 45000kms on the clock. I bought it new and had it resprayed one year later (lousy original Suzuki paint job!) in candy red (5 layers of varnish) in a personnal color (made to my specifications).
Some details of the paint :
http://s16.photobucket.com/albums/b24/G ... ure%20GSX/
The bike was originally blue...I didn't want any blue left overs! And the emblems/stickers had to be put back in their original positions. Nice job! Looks like if it were sold by Suzuki as is, but the quality is MUCH better!
Our 125 XLR
1986 or 87 (can't recall at the moment), 25000 kms. Bought form 1st owner in 2003.
Sitting in the garage too...I use it a couple of time a year to go commuting.
Our side-car (Honda ST1100 + DJ Saxo) which is from 1990 (we are the 4th owners, it was kept long times at each ownership) with over 130000kms. Bought it last year and already covered 20000kms only on vacations use!
This allows us to go motorcycling/camping and on vacations with the family. Thus the bikes being much less used...

Do you ever ride the st1100 without the sidecar attached?

No this is impossible.
The front fork and geometry is completely modified, the wheels are special and use car type tireS (flat), you would also need to take the electrics and hydraulics (brakes and lights) off...
Plus you don't have the right to. Indeed, the bike is heavily modified, much reinforcement on the chassis, and has passed a legal reception to be allowed to use it on the road : it's papers say that it is no longer a motorbike BUT a side-car. A whole different thing.

That is why I was wondering. We have Boss Hose here. They used a car type tire in the rear and a motorcycle tire in front. It didn't turn very well but was a bat out of * in a straight line.

My gasoline petcock on the Aero has just died...
Fuel was going into the engine by the depression hose and by the carb. So that must be why it was so hard to start.
Ordered at my favorite dealers...I hope it'll be here quickly because it almost impossible to start it now and it doesn't wan't to idle when you manage to make it start anyways.

Does it flow better at higher RPM? Have you checked for a leak in the vacuum line?

Fuel is coming out from the vaccum line. The rubber inside must be punctured.

Re: New member from France with a 1986 Aero 50
Ok, I got a couple more things fixed up.
The airbox now has all it's screws (still can't beleive that they had put the cover back on with only one screw in and with one of the two airbox to casing screws missing...) :
The air filter is now the good one (I think I'll be changing the airbox cover and it's grommit because they are both deformed) :
In order to let the engine breath a little, I had folded the old filter so the inlet wasn't obstructed.
That is also why the airbox cover didn't have all it's screws...impossible to close it completely!
Changed the fuel petcock. I'm assuming that so many years without riding just dried out the rubber diaphragm.
Symptoms :
Idle was not stable (sometimes high, sometimes lower almost stalling)
Running with hiccups sometimes at lower revs. Ok at high rpm's.
Fuel mileage was worse and worse and the above symptoms also (ran it about 200 kms like that).
Starting the engine was becoming almost impossible.
One morning I saw a puddle of gas under the scoot.
It was coming out by the carbs overfill outlet tube.
The engine was flooded, I had to take the plug out and let it dry.
I took the carb apart to check the floater was ok and it was.
Then I checked the vacuum tube...full of gas.
So the engine was burning gas from the carb AND the vacuum hence the bad mileage, poor starting, running and idling.
Now everything is ok (I did have to redo the carbs settings) but I have lost about 3 to 5 km/h top speed (not as much gas coming in... ) and TT starts first time, idles super sweet and runs as it should (but maybe main jet should be upgraded given the lower top speed?).
Gas mileage is improved too.
I'm awaiting my non restricted ramp plate to see if cruising speed will be ok and if I must go the bigger main jet way.
For information :
The petcock is no longer available.
The chinese like parts don't have the same threads (Honda Vision is 14 x 100 and chinese are 14 x 125 or 14 x 150 sometimes).
I found my petcock in an old Honda dealer's shop, it is not a OEM part. The references are on the packaging if it can be any use to you.
It was collecting dust for many years on the guys shelf and was stuck, but applying vacuum by mouth made it unstick.
I'm wondering how the next petcock fuel issue will be solved...
I got a bargain price : 20Ôé¼ vs 24Ôé¼ on the packaging.
As you may see, the old petcock had lost it's rubber seal...the fuel filter was no longer held in place (I did find a little bit of "sand" in the fuel floater's place). There is a sort of pipe with another tiny filter on top ( )?
What is that for???
The vacuum connexion is different from the original.

Comparision :
The inside of the tank seems ok (I'm also changing the fuel sender seal on the tank just to be sure) :
As is the fuel sender.

A job done quite well.
Thank you for sharing the other 'rides'. I've always been curious about sidecars, and the one that you have is also great looking.
