Mounting clamps

Pic from eliteguy shows Honda supplied "U" clamps for the lower mount. I looked around the hardware store and found none that would match the fork tube dia.

OEM Clamp:

Here's 2 clamps to try. The OEM has a flat side to the outside. One set is following the OEM model. The other moves the rack mount closer to centered on the fork. This about completes the Gyro front rack. All that remains is to fit up and put a finish on the rack.

By request here is my cargo basket addition. I don't know if I would call it fab. It's a basic milk crate. It was origanally mounted on a Bladez recreational scooter so I had split it down the back to mount closer to the pole. Since it was weakened, I reinforced it with wood.

I I bent the tabs on the Spree down to be a base for the crate to sit on.

I then used a bolt that matched the threads on the front tab on the headtube and ran the bolt thru the wood frame in the crate. It holds the crate nice and tight. The crate supports my dog just fine.

I also zip tied the speedo to the corner of the crate so I could watch my speed.

So, nothing fancy and very ghetto! :)

That frame support is a good idea for side mounting. Can you get screws into the bottom mount? It would reduce top mount stress from bumps and twisting loads.

I'm sure I could come up with a way to use the bottom tabs as a mount. I am now using them more as a solid base for the crate to sit on. Ive also got a large amount of screws holding the crate to the wood frame so it isn't going anywhere.

Grab bar made from OEM rack parts is completed. Everyone has a rack, with minimal work (or minor farm out) you can have a custom grab bar.
Design wise the grab bar is simpler looking vs the commercial version. Top rails are flat, and the rail to grab bar mounting does not create a big lump on the side. Mine is dead simple, come up with your grab bar design and post :thumbwink:

I can't agree more. I've been stripping vinyl from rusty old Honda baskets for restore, and thinking the whole time a milk crate will have no rust :)

Honda Gyro front rack is now finished and bolted up for fitting. Again, thanks to eliteguy50 for loaning a rare rack for duplication effort. :thumbwink:

An interesting part of the Gyro rack, is I found our official Honda brochure link shows my earlier rack pics had the rack installed backwards :D. So my rack has been installed to match Honda's pic. Yet, the rack is symmetrical enough to mount either way, so set it in the way that is most useful to *you*.

Learning from the build:
1) Bend radius where the rack drops to the fork mounts needs to be slightly larger, will update the dimensions shortly.
2) "U" clamps have interference at full steering travel. It's likely an issue of my own creation and assumptions as we do not have a clear view of the entire OEM clamp. I'll fix the issue and post the the Gyro thread. Please refer to pic 7 of the set. The pic also shows a loosely bolted up clamp for fitting pics only.

-- Baskets --
Honda is still selling a rear basket. It is slightly different than the original rack, but close in size. Cost is around $30-35.
Part numbers: White - 08145-GN261, Black - 08145-GN271

New style is simplified and cost reduced. no "Honda' logo badge, no built in mount.

We have a few baskets in need of repair/refinish. They show typical issues, rust, peeling, bent wires, bowed/out of square alignment and broken welds.

the bottom line is don't take credit for something that has been done 20 yrs ago, BTW if you have an aftermarket exhaust you don't need a grab bar or a center stand unless you like that rattle that will dig a hole in your exhast.
