Attn all Oahu moped riders

Post by GuavaJam »

There's a new moped law being proposed on Oahu by the Kalihi councilman. He has cited moped accidents and loud mopeds as the reason for proposed yearly registration fees, safety checks and required insurance. Maui and I believe one other county have already adopted this law, and he's saying it makes sense to follow since we're the biggest county. If u want to keep things the way they are now, I suggest u email or call your local councilmember and let him know how u feel. Thanks.

Fight it or it'll end up like it is over here in UK:
  • Annual Road Tax
    Compulsory Insurance
    50cc Capacity Limits
    Limited top speed (30mph)
    No Passengers
    Annual safety check (MOT)
Learner plates (until you pass bike test)
There's been a war on bikers since the rocker days of the 1950's and a whole mangle of complexities in getting your bike license with restrictions on capacity limits, power/ weight ratios depending on how old you are.

Yet you can learn to drive in any car (even Ferrari, Lambo) you want as long as you can afford the insurance.

Yeah that sucks. $15 bucks every 3 years here in Michigan, no insurance or anything, and 100cc or less. Cops really don't pay any attention to you as long as you aren't going over the posted speed limits.

Think of registration as insurance if someone steals it, unless of course you already have full coverage insurance. If so, it's an easy way for cops to find stolen bikes.
With our registration here we get to park on the sidewalks. So it's kind of a "park anywhere" permit also.

I too have to buy insurance and get registered and tagged in lovely Kansas... And almost forgot we have to pay property taxes every year! 1man is right, if stolen it can possibly be founded, and you get some money back from the insurance company. All my scooters are full coverage!

$80 every 2 years?

Before I can even get out and ride, the costs are £17 road tax, around £150 insurance (which we also pay insurance tax on), £30 for an MOT/ safety test.
That's $300 dollars each year for us.

I e-mailed 2 council members. One is the city council head, and he thanked me for my "perspective". I plan on sending another to talk about alternative transportation on Oahu, which we so desperately need. You can get all the council members email address from the city's govt website.
