overheating with new windshield

Post by ped »

Hi forum.
I'm getting ready for cold weather riding so I got a new windshield.
Now motor is overheating with the new windshield on.
What a bummer. It must be the air holding the scooter back?
Putting extra pressure on the motor?
I tried two different styles of windshield but no luck it overheats on high speed rides. :?

Maybe I can up jet?
Any help would be appreciated Thanks

Could you try to change the angle ? Tip the top back to make it more aerodynamic .
Or cut it down and make it smaller ?
I have shields on all mine, because I like an open face helmet.

Greetings:

Could be the additional frontal area increases the drag so bad that the engine needs more RPM to stay cool at hgh velocities. What if that's not the problem at all? Maybe the cooler, denser air calls for an upsized jet?

The shield may be the thing, but consider removing it and go for a check-ride to confirm your premises.

It would seem that if top speed isn't reduced it wouldn't be the windshield.
But, as always, I reserve the right to be completely wrong.

Drills holes in the shield to make more air flow.

Nah, honestly when I tuck in on my spree I gain 2-3 mph so that shield is probably dragging heavily. Not only that but the front end gets funky stress from air resistance.

Try a colder plug and a fan scoop.

Hi forum.
I did try a different angle on the other windshield, but no good.

Wheelman I think you're right about the windshield causing drag.
The scooter has slowed down quite a bit. It's pushing a lot of air.

I will have to try a smaller windshield. I don't think it's going to help much when it drops down to 40 Degrees outside?

A colder plug and a fan scoop, sound like a good idea. If that doesn't work I will definitely have to up jet.
I have a 120 mj on a 24mm now.

Thanks for all the great advice you guys. this forum rocks.

I just now read your signature. Is this your 86 spreedio you are installing the windshield on? If so, disregard my warning label post. I'd think an unrestricted af16 could handle it especially on a light spree. Do you know what temperature the engine is getting up to?

Greetings:

Sorry I wasn't clear. I meant to say it's possible the shield has NOTHING to do with the higher temps you assumed were caused by its installation. I'm saying maybe it's something else. You can prove me wrong. Remove the shield. Ride. Check temps.

I second this. You may have developed an air leak.

Hi wheelman, & 1man8scoots.
You guys were right I developed a air leak. The lower base gasket blew. :surprise:
I did not notice until I pull the fan shroud off.

I noticed a little pitting on the top edge of the piston. Does anyone know if I can reuse that piston?
The temperature hit 450 degrees.
any info would be greatly appreciated thanks.

 hi forum.
You really can't see the pitting but you can feel it a little bit. The bore looks good not scraped up.
I was far from home when it really started getting hot. :(
