im looking to install heated grip elements on my 1988 sa50 with a af16 for winter riding. I found some kimpex elements that look like they will barely fit under my grips they draw 3 amps. do you guys think my charging system can handle 3 amps of extra current?

Yes, especially if you upgrade your batt and add a headlight off switch. My scoot used to have a small amplifier and 2 speakers, never seemed to have an issue.

Sweet looks like I'm going to give it a try, hopefully i can get the elements to fit under my grips. The description says they fit grips no shorter than 4 '' so its going to be close.

You can get heated grip elements from china for about 3$.
I wonder if they would work.

I can get name brand set for about $25 Im gonna try them they seem to be the smallest ones I could find.

And the charging system can handle an extra 3a draw. You could get a 01 stator for a bit more juice.

The charging system can not handle that much extra current draw.

The battery will need to be externally charged to keep up with the heated grips.

Ah I was thinking .3 not 3 in my head. How much extra is acceptable?

If i had to guess, (and i do because i don't know the exact output of the voltage regulator) I would say the regulator puts out no more that 2 amps of dc current.

The headlight is ac current and runs off a different circuit. I tried to run the 25w headlight on the dc side of things....the charging system could not keep up.


3 amps at 12 volts is 36 watts of power.

Great point there jamz. Maybe the headlight circuit could do the job hard to say.

I tried to do the math on the output and I figured it would be around .9 amp output. I upgraded my batt to a 12ah out of an electric scooter, disconnected my stock headlight(even tho it's a different circuit I figure it at least takes a small load off) and installed an hid bulb off the battery and a Rockford fosgate amp (tiny one, maybe 40 watts total output) on my scoot and it didn't die On me, even used the starter. I think a larger battery has a better recovery rate that helps it even out the load. I'm sure in the long run the battery might need an external charger, but so far I only need a charger when I can't get it started. Every now n then Id get crud in the carb and have to try over n over to get it home, cranking the starter til it's dead. But that wasn't the exta load killing it then haha. If your not running the grips all the time I think you'll be ok, but again only w an upgraded battery to back up the charging system. The stock batt is too small even for the stock bike imo.

Now this is the type of battery you need imo. This one's mine. I took out the fac battery box and this slid right in on my 86 aero 50. I put it on after the stock one died

Sealed "gel-cel"type, you can get em in lots of sizes. I bet one that's the stock size would do well too.
