I have a bad starter motor. I was looking on ebay and wow, spree starters are expensive. Yet GY6 starters are like 15 bucks. What's the difference? Will a gy6 starter not fit on a spree?
Sure it's chineese, but if it frys, you can get another.

The problem with alot of these starters is just corrosion and time has caught up with them. Just take your old one, tear it apart, clean out all the gunk with a wire brush, wipe it down, blow it out, regrease it, and try it again. Might just save yourself 100 bucks and have a fully functional starter.

That's good news.
The bad news is when I tested it something started smoking.
And it wasn't me.

Could be the wiring. The wire gets hot when the starter is not working right or working harder. I've got mine to start getting warm before haha.

But ya these starters are pretty simple. I took mine apart (86 aero 50) and drained the rusty water out of it, cleaned it up a little, and let it dry. After I put it back together it works awesome.

I talked to one of the maintenance engineers at the tv station I work at. He told me if it's it gunked up it will draw more current and I likely fried the wires since I wasn't using the proper gauge.

His hobby is restoring old tv equipment and running a 70's era studio out of his home. Did I mention this guy lives in an old school? Did I also mention he's only 26?
I'm bringing it in tomorrow and have him look at it.

He said the brushes are too far gone.

I have a spare (variated) AF05e motor from an Aero/Elite that has a starter on it. Does anyone know if they are compatible with the Af05e Spree motor?

Oh, and did I mention the mount is busted....because the mount is busted.

One thing is for sure, mousewheels knows his stuff. If he says it, I believe it to be golden. Ive personally never changed brushes in a starter motor but I have with great success in power tools like drills, saws and even a shop vac once. New brushes ordered. Now I need another bad starter in order to replace the mounting face

I'd be interested to know if the LT80 brushes fit too. On this side of the pond, they are available as part of the LT80 kit, shame the rest of it is apparently the wrong parts. A few months ago I changed the brushes on may car's starter, the difference in cold weather was like night and day. Many people simply swap out the starter, but it's only an extra 30 mins to change the brushes.
