Before I invest in a $90 stator. Does a stator sound like my issue? CH80

Sounds like a perfectly running stator, headlights run off stator current so start dim with lower rpm and increasingly brighten with rpm raise. Unless I'm misinformed that's how it's supposed to work.

Its normal don't worry about your stator. That's how every bike is.

My 1987 Honda Elite 150 CH150 "Spacey" nor my BMS Tuscan 50 do this.

The CH150, key on turns on the headlight

The BMS, key doesn't turn on headlight untill motor is running.

1987 ch150 having DC headlight system, power from battery not from stator, key ON and headlight also ON....if i remember correctly CH80 is AC which is from stator, totally different ballgame. You can check out by turn ON ignition key but not start engine, if your CH80 headlight does not ON, then no worry.

Yes, this is why I gave the example of my BMS Scooter. It's AC. It's not dim when idling.

You are comparing apples to oranges.
Your Elite 80 is working just fine.

The Honda electrical system doesn't generate enough wattage at idle for the headlight to be fully bright. As long as it brightens when you throttle up, it's fine. All of my 50cc Hondas have done that. Maybe the Yamaha has more coils to generate full wattage, even at idle?
