Fuel Gauge ?

My wife recently purchased a 1985 Spree. The fuel gauge was not working so I looked at it yesterday and discovered someone installed a newer three wire sending unit. They never connected the wires. I realized this after tearing into the harness looking for the blue/white wire. 1985 does not have a blue/white wire. I hooked the remaining two wires up and the gauge came up to about half way. The tank is full. Is this an issue with the sending unit or because it was not for the 1985? Any way to make it read the correct level?
