Holy Grail of Clean, Simple, Cheap 2-Smoke

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

Idly surfing for Vespa history, came across this in a Wiki article. It has been 20 years. Where are our smokeless strokers?

Greetings:

Sorry, apparently the Wiki site changed overnight. I'll try to hunt down the article and re-post. Found it here.

Wheelman. I don't think the smokeless strokers are coming. The future looks electric.

I fear you're correct, Ped. We'll be riding Kitchenaids, if/when the Breakthrough battery technology eventually occurs.

That Piaggio engine arcitecture looks similar to the Hanomag 2 stroke super-charged diesel tractors from the 50's.

Bought a book recently on building an electric motorcycle, you ended up with something like a Harley with 15 lead acid batteries strapped to it with a top speed of a Dio-less Spree.
It was an old book.

Greetings:

When the green-minded engineers get the battery technology good enough so that range isn't limited to 20 miles or whatever, my Electric Scooter will have an electric Smoke Generator. Or perhaps a fire pit to burn household trash behind me as I ride...

This Spring, I spent a month traveling around Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea to check out the scooter scene. In Shanghai, it is very rare to find a gasoline powered scooter. 99% of the scooters in Shanghai are electric, and battery technology varies from ancient to fairly modern... range is good, but I think the government may limit top speed.. not sure about that. You can't trust the fake news that says Shanghai is a dirty mess, full of pollution and traffic. I found it to be the cleanest city on my trip. I could post a hundred scooter photos, but here are 10 from Shanghai that are representative:

This first one is probably what you think of when you think of Chinese electric scooter. Gotta love that basket! A man after my own heart!.. LOL. A lot of the older scooters have 'Roo bars to keep the sides from getting beat up. This is old battery technology.. batteries are under the footboard:

Image

This next one is a typical hot food delivery vehicle. Also has 'Roo bars:

Image

I wouldn't mind having this one.. older technology, and a great basket!

Image

Here is a row of typical beaters. again, pretty old technology:

Image

I don't know about you guys, but in my book two-wheel disk brakes are the "hooked up" setup:

Image

Another typical row of beaters:

Image

Typical street scene.. not much traffic. Cleaner streets than in New York, Chicago, or L.A. and blue skies:

Image

Even the Police cars are electric.. battery technology in these is pretty modern and they are pretty quick. Note the chain protecting the battery cover. Makes me wonder why nobody on this forum has build an 80 mph electric Spree. Has to be much easier than a Dio swap. Remove the gas tank and oil tank and put in batteries:

Image

Here is another one... I'd be fine driving this around:

Image

Gotta love this fully dressed out one..glove box, 2 wheel disk brakes, backrest, top box:

The scooter scene in Taiwan is much different than in China. There are very modern gasoline powered scooters from Sym and Kymco all over the place, along with dirty streets, and mostly 50 year old or older buildings.
