Is this a special Tact?

Post by vintagegarage »

There were ads a few weeks ago on eBay in California from someone selling a number of Honda Tacts that had been newly imported from Japan. I think there were a dozen or so, perhaps more, of them for sale. I don't see the ads on eBay any longer.

In any event, there is an ad now on Orlando craigslist that looks very similar to the eBay ads. see:

https://orlando.craigslist.org/mcy/d/us ... 35530.html

My question is "are the decals on this Tact factory stock?" It looks like some sort of anniversary special..might be something collectible?

Hi. I don't think they're anything super special. I believe they come in 2-stroke and 4-stroke Motors.
Life's a trip enjoy the ride.

I wasn't asking if Tacts in general were collectable, just this one with the anniversary decals.

Those ads have been popping up on Seattle Craig's as well...The seller has apparently imported multiple scooters from japan. https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/mcy/ ... 66589.html

At one point, he had 10 or so different ones for sale on Cali Craigs and Ebay... http://www.ebay.com/itm/1985-HONDA-SCOO ... vV&vxp=mtr

Ped and meatball.. Appreciate the comments, but you still didn't answer my question.. is this Tact a special one because of being an anniversary version, and are the decals put on by the factory?

The one in the Seattle ad looks like the same one as in the Orlando ad.

I didn't see that Gyro X on eBay.. . I would have like to have had that one... worried a bit about titleing and the Japanese Tact's though..

Meatball.. that Dio looks nice too.. other than the prices being too high on all of his scooters, what worries me the most is the line:

*DMV paper ready to registration"

I think that means that the Florida Tax Assessor (Florida DMV) will say "Oh Hêll no!" when the VIN doesn't come up as being something legal to sell in the U.S.

On the subject of Dios, I have been pestering my local Honda Dealer to see if they can get me one of these DIO 110s, Made in Mexico, sells in Mexico new for 24,490 Mexican Pesos, the equivalent of $1,380 US dollars.. Now that would be a good deal! Have a look at:

IMHO...almost certainly left the factory just as you see it.
Collectible value surely present.
I know my interest would be multiplied by the anniversary model opposed to a U.S. import model... :urban:
btw...never seen one before.

Seems to be very close to a US market Aero with what looks to be an af05 motor. Seen as popular in Japan for modding..... :worship:
Definitely a factory decal, probably given to an executive or sold at a dealership grand opening? That's a killer price if you live nearby! Certainly collectible!

mm and bones.. thanks.. I would follow up on it if I lived in California and understood their registration system. What I really want though more than a special Tact is one of these Gyro canopies:

That guys earlier ads were odd. He just took pics of a warehouse full of scoots with instruction to make an appointment and come make an offer. Cool scooters, but not really how CL works.

Vintage, if you're interested in anything he has, I might get be able to go and check it out. He's pretty local to me in LA.

California registration laws are byzantine, and conflicted. The seller may have more info, but because of their age, and the fact he imported these from Japan, the scooters fall under both 'grey market' and 'before 2005/under 50cc'. On the one hand, CA DMV says under 50cc and model year before 2006 are exempt from emission laws, but on the same page under Out of Country/Grey Market they state the "No motorcycle or diesel-powered vehicle can be converted to California emission standards". I'm not 100%, but I'm fairly certain the 'before 2005/under 50cc' rule takes precedence.

As for taxes, according to the CA DMV and the CA Board of Equalization (http://www.boe.ca.gov/pdf/pub52.pdf), here's how things should apply to people buying from another state:

"Private party purchase for out-of-state use, one-trip permit
The purchase of a vehicle from a person in California, who is not required to hold a dealerÔÇÖs license or a sellerÔÇÖs permit (private party), is generally subject to use tax at the time the vehicle is registered with the DMV. However, a purchaser is not required to pay California use tax if the only use of the vehicle purchased from a private party in California is to remove it from the state and it will be used solely thereafter outside this state. This exclusion from use tax requires that no other use can be made of the vehicle in this state. A One-Trip Permit may be issued by the DMV in lieu of registration, for operating certain vehicles while being moved or operated unladen for one continuous trip from a place within this state to another place outside this state. This exclusion does not apply to sales tax.

Got this from the seller (edited for clarity - I believe he's a native Japanese speaker).
"Yes, you can register this kind of scooter to DMV. These models are over 25-years old, and not covered by DOT (EPA), just registration by DMV in CA.
I have prepared a Bill of Sale, Invoice, Bill of Lading from Japan, Packing list with vin#, Customs declaration form and clearance certificate, scooter country of origin, and owner transfer certificate from foreign country to local in US.
You will have to take the scooter and paperwork to the CHP first to get safety certificate and authorization, then go to local DMV in CA."

That's a Factory-issued Version of the AF09 chassis. Lots of little details added, including that plaid seat trim you see in the pic and dark blue speedometer surround/ trim. There's a dedication statement on the front & side panels:

"One Million-Seller Celebration Anniversary Special Edition Traditional feeling & nice, xxxxxxx Produced by Honda"
