Float adjustment

Would someone please advise me on the correct procedure for measuring float height? I have vernier calipers, my original manual, dial and digital along with a Mitatoya height guage. What I am unclear about is what is to be measured, from where to where and when, meaning contact with the float needle.

Float height is usually measured holding the carb upside-down, and checking the distance from the carb body bowl surface to the bottom of the float. This process is virtually useless in these days since floats are generally plastic with a fixed needle position, and changing that fixed measurement in not permitted. Only on floats with metal hinge is there the possibility of adjusting float height.

So I take it that it is not advisable to try and flex 36 year old plastic. I shall measure just to see how close it is to the recommended measurement. Thanks

You can very easily check the fuel level in the bowl without ever taking the bowl off.
1. Attach a clear fuel line to the bowl drain. 12 inches is perfect length.
2. Place the fuel line (with the end pointing up) next to the bowl.
3. Open the bowl drain.
4. Fuel will seek its own level and can be seen in fuel line exactly where it is in the bowl.
Hope this method will satisfy your curiosity of your float level question.

Greetings:

Honda's solution to the level issue is to replace the float. Fortunately the carb kit can still be found and it's relatively cheap. I may have the only PA carb that actually has a metal tab on its float. Engine is from a 2001, possibly a very late model of that year. Swapped with another Forum member several years ago. I have yet to hear anyone else indicate something other than the all-plastic float assembly.

The float I was talking about is for my 1984 nh125 with 700 miles on the scooter. It is all plastic. The clear tubing is a dandy idea that I shall use and measure from there to the flange. You all are always so informative. This is a great forum and much appreciated.

Just for future reference, you should always give a bit of info as to what make/model/year scooter you are referring to to help draw those especially knowledgeable to be invited to your post, especially the subject title. Glad you found this forum to be helpful.
