After 22 years of driving, I've now become the proud owner of a scooter... had it for 6 hours now!

and after my first embarrasing mishap (how was I to know the engine won't kick over if you don't hold the brake lever in.. ) I've got a few bits of work to do.

First, since it has been de-registered in this country, I need to pass over the correct model and year details in order to get the licence plates.

Is there an online resource anywhere that I can enter the chassis number and get a year of manufacture?

Year is on a plate riveted to the frame behind the front wheel. Dont feel bad it took me days of tracing wires before I figured out the brake thing (previous owner hot wired the starter relay, i installed a new control block).

thanks for that, but its not present.. not even any rivet holes. Dealership reckons that way back then they didn't bother with VIN for scooters, and even now its the frame number they go from (managed to locate that OK).

Guess I can but try and get it registered and hope that since its been previously registered here their database will have the old details like year of manufacture. Guessing it has to be post '87 as the net articles reckon blue plastics only came out in that year or after...

then just need a seat re-upholstery, wing mirrors and an indicator battery...

Oh, and the wife now wants to know if it is normal for scooter riders to
"assume the posture" and make Crazy Frog noises...?

all i can say is post some pictures of it.
Between all of us we should be able to find out for you.

You can also look at the edge of the frame just below the right side of the floorboard. Sometimes Honda put VIN there too.

So hopefully you can give me an idea of the year from that.. I hope i got everything relevant.

On the upside, I've managed to progress, and its almost road legal. I got it registered (as an 88), fitted wing mirrors, filled, charged and fitted the battery, tested electrics and cut the vinyl to re-upholster the seat.

Found that I have a front left indicator out and the bulb looks good, so I have to trace back and find the problem there. the fuel guage may also be bust.

Also looks like I need to straighten the left hand leg of the stand as its forward of the right one and I've had it scrape to ground a few times when I've been cornering.

Outstanding questions...

Year? (a label I found under the seat says its an NQ50M if that helps any..)

Indicators... is it supposed to beep when the indicators are on, or have i got a short to the horn?

Air scoop.. what difference will this make?

I don't think it's a USA model, but it appears to be an 86, except for the fuel valve.

I like the turn signals on your scoot. Much better than the US version of your bike.

Were you able to find the VIN on the frame? I suspect either 86 or 87 as well.

Thanks CSR, I got that location.. its a shorter VIN than appears to be used in the States, but it is indeed what the New Zealand licencing laws are after.. so its all registered, legal and mine!

(newbie admits to having googled the term petcok so he knows what you guys are on about..) Um.. is that an unusual feature? Is there something special I should know about it... bearing in mind I know its running low on gas and the wiki entry says that maybe i should be putting it into a reserve position??

In the US version, all of the petcocks are vacuum operated. It appears that yours is manual, which is MUCH better, as the valve that operates when vacuum is applied is that source of alot of fuel delivery problems. If I could get a manual petcock on my bikes, I would do it in a heartbeat.
