ID honda scooter

Post by DaveInTexas »

I am looking for a website or other online help that will help me identify which scooter my dad has. He and the scooter are 2000mi from me, so he is sending me what he can find out.

So far, he says this is a 1997 Honda Dio 50cc 2-stroke Body style MC, VIC PGJXX1
He says it looks like the Elite 50S except not 4-stroke from internet photos we can find.

The reason is, the scooter is overcharging and boiling batteries.

Trying to find out what part to repair/replace.

Thanks.

OK,
Elite SR50 2 stroke
Probably the voltage regulator, where do I get one?

This place
http://www.mrcycles.com/fiche_select1.a ... &mfg=Honda
only lists:

1997 CH80
1997 CN250
1997 SA50
1997 SA50P

think its the SA50?

it doesn't matter if it is an SA50 or SA50P...they use the same regulator.
there should be a white sticker on the frame tube beneath the foot board. it can be seen from one side or the other (while laying on the ground) without removing the footboard. this sticker will have the year, model, vin number

The sticker says
Dio Honda Reg
Body Style MC VIC PGJXX1 (or I)
VIN JHZAFZ (or 2)720VK400259 not sure if 0's are zeros.

Where should I buy it, what should I buy?

It looks like a Dio imported from Canada. Is the speedometer in mph or km/hr?

Either way, just use SA50 parts.

That is where we are now, I cannot find any voltage regulators!

Where/Who has this part?

This just in....

Apparently this bike has had 2 voltage regulator recently and they both burned out.

Anyone think it is the rectifier or alternator?

The voltage regulators seem to go on older Honda's. I've seen two go personally (Aero 80 and Elite 80). Perhaps the regulators that were being used for replacement were old busted ones?

I can't really imagine a fault alternator burning this out.....but maybe. I'm not that knowledgeable about electronics.

Using Honda's microfiche, it lists two difference part numbers for the SA50's voltage regulator. These are:
- 31600-GAH-004
- 31600-GBL-871

Both of them should work fine. Voltage regulators from a lot of small Honda scooters should work, but there are a few different ones (different numbers of wires) so don't just buy anything.

You can buy a new regulator from Honda, but it's about $75.

I just did a bit more research and it seems the regulators from the SE50, NB50 and SA50 will all work. You can buy a new one of these on eBay for $30 OBO:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HONDA-RE ... enameZWDVW

If you want to go used, you can get one for $10:

the voltage regulator is part of the electrical system, not part of the alternator assembly (where your parts link goes to). when you are looking at the parts website, select wire harness (instead of alternator) from the drop down menu then click the go button. item 4 is the rectifier/regulator (same thing).

he is right that both will work. the 31600-GBL-871 is just the newer part that haonda uses now and it replaces the 31600-GAH-004.

as far as getting parts go... a lot of guys go new from honda, but I like ebay for this sort of part. even if the used honda (or new chinese made) regulator only lasts 40% as long as a new one, it only costs 20% of new price. so I still come out ahead and I have never had to replace one twice.
your vin is JH2AF2720VK400259. in accordance with iso standards set back in 1979/1980: the letter o will never be used to avoid confusion with the number 0. the letter i will not be used to aviod confusion with the number 1 and so on...

I decoded your vin...1997 honda sk50m...not a model sold in the USA. it was made in japan for asian markets. I am not that familiar with this model so it could have one of the other Dio motors that are used in asia and europe...there are 3 diff. dio motors but only 1 used here in the states so I don't know much about the other 2 dio's. this could be why it has been frying the electrical system.

If you'd rather not get a new one, I have one I'm certain will work. It came from a '94 SA50P I parted out.

Not looking for much, $5 should cover it. Another few bucks for shipping. Let me know.
