'87 Spree build up.

Post by Bandit240 »

Ok, so i got a nice looking '87 Spree. It runs and rides, but its slow. Ive got an '87 Elite 50 engine. Going to merge the two.

Spree as i got it.

The stock engine.

Hey, someone stole my engine!

The donor engine, sorry about the sideways pic.

In place. I mounted the stock spree motor mount where the stand should be. Thats after i already cut up the Elite 50 mount and messed it up.

So im thinking about taking some threaded rod and u-bolt it to the bottom of the frame for an upper shock mount. I dont have welder and i dont feel like messing with one anyway. Im going to use my already cleaned Spree carb with an 80 jet on it. I will be using the Elite airbox. Thats it for now.

d*** if you decide to let go of any spree parts let me know!!

What else do you plan on doing? Painting it? Messing with the motor? Yer still off to a good start though. Keep it up :thumbwink:

Alright, ive decided to stop the SE50 engine swap for now. Since Ive already cut the motor mount area, im going to swap everything over to my other good frame. Its been painted red already anyway, so it will work out good. Im going to keep working on mounting the engine in the already modified frame using a newer '01 elite 50 motor mount.

This is the other frame ive already painted. Going to paint the forks too since i will be removing them.

I may be willing to sell the white panels, but the rears are in bad shape.

So ive got it all back together and running. Its running good, idles great, but at full speed it sputters. It has a #68 jet with the stock airbox and new OEM filter. It will get up to about 20 and then start sputtering. Should i put a bigger jet in it?

Alright, so i put a #78 jet in it and put the needle to the top. Still not a happy bike.

ok i'm not a pro by far! lol but whats the plug look like? anything lighter in color then cardboard and its to lean. What yr carb you got on it?

also..you say 20 mph eh?....you sure it aint from iowa? the iowa spree's had "a washer" in the exhaust i beleive? (if i remember correctly..)

way to tell is check out your vin number.. It'll have like, jh2af060- OR jh2af061-
If its the 61, its from iowa. If thats the case, search on here for the iowa model restricter they put in them. i'm pretty sure its in the exhaust at the very end of it. the "outlet".

Get a 85 or 88 jet.if your running it without the airbox you will have to go bigger like a 92 or 95.
Nothing like getting stroked!

Greetings:

I concur with Bakaracer on jetting.

One concern: Is it still mounted only by the sheetmetal frame tangs. Honda uses that rubber-damped 3-point mount for good reason. I have no confidence that the engine will be stable in the bank axis, which could set you up for some exciting wobbles at speed = High underwear cleaning cost.

Ping Bradthreee for a better way to mount the Elite engine.

Wait a minute here guys, im not running the Elite engine. It has its stock spree engine back in. I had to quit with the elite engine due to mounting issues.

Greetings:

 Sorry my mistake. Stock Spree mount too?

In that case, 68 is stock jet and a clean-carb Spree with all the fixin's should run well with it. Airbox and muffler issues? Compression? Reeds??
