BEAR FIGHT!!! (and also a spree build)

Post by shane_lxi »

Just bought this '86 spree on friday for $250! Bought it from the original owner with 1400 miles and original manual. Seems to run okay, only had one problem and I think it was just flooded. Planning to use it as a commuter whenever possible (the weather up here will prolly give me about 4 months of use a year :P)

    Image

Had a few questions, and I'm searching around for answers too. I'm 6'3", and about 170lbs. My spree doesnt want to go over 25mph. And even then, I have to kind of ease into it. If I hold it at full throttle, it'll hold it for a bit then bog down. I need to hold it at mid throttle if I am going to have to maintain my speed for a while. Is this normal? I'd like to atleast break 30mph. Any advice? I'm planning on replacing the belt and such, and getting a bigger tire in the rear. Thinking maybe 80/90-10, and maybe 2.75-10 on the front?

Rebuild the carb and the "ease it in" problem will go away. Why would you think it would run right with a carb problem?

^ because I wasn't aware there was one :P, lol. I'll try that out, thanks man :D. Ordered my tires today via fleabay, and I'm headed to the dealer tomorrow to order my drive belt if they can still get them :P. Starting the seafoam treatment too. I don't mind how fast it goes, really, I just want to keep it running reliably :D. Of course, a little more speed wouldn't suck either :D.

Edit: thank you search button, ordered my new belt from O'reilly for $9 :)

If it "seemed" flooded, it probably was.

It flooded because my nephew was messing with the throttle last night. Running fine right now, but I went ahead and ordered a gasket set so I can clean up the carb like you suggested.

    Greetings:

Your nephew may have "messed with the throttle" but that won't flood your carb. The carb's slide position has absolutely no effect on fuel processing with the engine off. You may be thinking of accelerator pump carbs, which this is not.

What will flood your carb is a 25 year-old float valve and/or petcock that are gummed up and not closing completely. Peruse the Tech Docs to read all about it.

He layed the bike over too, I wonder if that had anything to do with it. Started up perfect before, and started up fine this morning after sitting all night, but wouldn't start last night after he got done with it, lol. Ill post some pics soon after I do some more to it :), this site is very informative.

    Greetings:

If the scooter stayed down for a few seconds, the carb may have dumped its bowl contents out a vent. This would then require a long spell of cranking to apply vacuum to the petcock and allow the carb to refill. A slow leaking petcock would refill the carb overnight.

I still recommend you evaluate the tank and its petcock, and a thorough cleaning of the carb and appraisal of all the hoses. Old rubber can become brittle and crack. Fuel leaks are bad enough, but a leaking vacuum line can be catastrophic as it adds unwanted air and leans the mixture.

Riding at full throttle today, hit almost 35mph, then it started bogging down until it died and won't start... must be carb :P

Compression check first. It sounds like you leaned it out and hurt the top end of the motor.

I was a professional 2 stroke mechanic for 20 some odd years besides being a 2 stroke champion boat racer and I never once heard a 2 stroke ping and I know of no one else who has either and I ran plenty of them in test tanks.
