You only need the Engine Enamel for the exhaust. You can use regular paint for the wheels and the exhaust guard. I would take them back and save a few bucks.

Greetings:

Hot 2-stroke exhaust will quickly cook "Engine" enamel. BBQ paint or specifically-designed Exhaust paints last a bit longer, but I've never used one that still looked good after a few thousand miles, particularly up around the exhaust flange. YMMV.

Based on the ability to light my Rocky Patel off the header pipe, I'd say WAY over 500 degrees. 800 is more like it, but ax anyone who has mounted an EGT for confirmation.

I had a 1977 Yamaha 750 Triple at one time, featuring a flat-black Kerker header. The black paint turned white almost immediately. Repainted with at least 3 different products with the same result. My current Sportster has a ceramic-coated Lightning header, handmade by a hardcore California gearhead who has access to some subcontractor for NASA. Aerospace, Space Shuttle tile stuff. AFAIK, that's the only way to keep it black for long. Not sure it's worth it for a plastic-covered scooter.

-Just my 2 cents... but alot of times it is definitely how you apply the paint, as well as a good paint to begin with.

If you plan to paint your scooter's muffler, I recommend having it "hot-tanked" at a machine shop. Hot Tanking is where the part (like a carbon and oil-gunk filled old muffler) is dipped hot sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid gets ALL the carbon out of inside of the muffler, and literally makes it like flow new... Usually only costs around $15 at a machine shop.

For painting your muffler yourself, here's what I have done-

1st step: Sandblasting the surface that will be painted

2nd step: Cleaning the sandblasted metal with denatured alcohol / brake cleaner etc

3rd step: Priming the metal with a "BBQ" type (1200 deg) paint primer

4th step: Reading the instructions and then painting the surface.... light coats, drying, "curing" the primed and painted part in the oven at the specified temp; usually low at first, then letting it completely cool, "curing" the paint in the oven again at a higher temp, and again at an even higher temp... I have heard the trick to using the "ultra" high temp paint is NOT to use too thick of a coat.

I have had great luck by doing this method on scooter exhausts, and the paint holds up great, even around the header flange.

The "BBQ" paints tend to fail when the paint is exposed to rain splashes when the muffler is really hot.

-I totally agree with Wheelman, though; ceramic coating is the way to go. It will never fade, crack, peel, etc with heat, and i keeps alot of the heatinside the pipe, resulting in better performance, so I have been told.

Anyways, hope this helps.

Greetings:

Thanks for the tips on exhaust painting, Jon. My "skills" in this regard are legendary. Where's a good place to buy the Ultra-Heat primer and topcoat?
Appreciate the compliments on my Sporster S. No trick to a super-clean HD if you start with a new one, other than frequent washing. They don't leak oil anymore. No, really! We're actually selling both Sportsters. Hers is a 2003 100th Anniversary Custom 883. Cleaner than mine, for sure.
