Picked this up this winter and been working on it a bit off and on. I got it running well with a basic tune up but can't get it to take a charge or hold a charge. I think the problem is either the stator or the rectifier.

Any info on how to test those with my multimeter would be greatly appreciated.

dont know much about the stator and rectifier but the manual on the board you can download will help, oh and that is not an elite. that is a spree. there are a couple of different bbks for it and a set of gears all from forum member tazland001. when you get the elec figured out you should give him a pm. oh and good find dude!

I totally knew that, I was looking at an 83 Elite on CL and it just got stuck in my head.

Greetings:

Nice find in a rare color.

If the battery won't "take or hold" charge, have you considered the very likely possibility that the battery itself is the problem?

When they go bad, often in just a few years, that's how they behave. Sportster Gel batteries go bad in 3 years in Deepinnaharta Texas heat. Maybe 4-5 when maintained in cooler climes.
By all means, check out the scootertronics per the FSM, but my money's on a bad battery. Put it on a "Smart" charger for 24 hours and see if it holds 12.8V. Any less and you need a new one.

I'll definitely throw it on the charger tomorrow. No big cost even if it needs to be replaced.

Thanks

I had a similar problem on mine, only the headlight didnt work either D:

In the end I replaced both the stator and the voltage regulator. If your headlights still work when its running, it could be the voltage regulator, but I would make sure it's not a bad battery first :3

If you have a look in the wiring diagram, you can find which wire powers the headlights, and swap it with the one that's routed to your voltage regulator, then swap them. If your headlights still work, chances are its the regulator.

Give it a try at least, it worked for me :D
