1968 Little Honda P50

Post by zuphilius »

I can't help it!! Just went and bought a 1968ish P50 Little Honda. $50 and it's in the garage.

From what I can tell, missing three important items. The chain guard, the carb cover and the muffler. Found a facebook site just for the P50, going to find out how much that will set me back.

Tomorrow, out to the garage to see if I can get it running.

Greetings:

Unique find, Zu! When ya gonna get a bigger rear brake? :P

I bet parts are harder to find than the SB50's... but hope you succeed. There have been a couple of really remarkable Gyro and Spree restorations posted here lately. Must be Spring-time!

Thanks Mr. Wheel! Parts are out there, albeit expensive. Luckily, the Little Honda is 95% complete. Unluckily, the 5% missing are of the unobtainium variety. But I do have leads on most parts.

Well, today was a nice day out, so into the garage/man cave I went. I did a little work on the P50 today, and here are the results:

I still have to get a fuel line, I'm waiting on some wire sheathing and I'm going to recover the brake/accelerator/decompression/speedometer cables.

But, that's all for today.

Are you gonna use the original light?

If not....would you like to sell it?

That's cleaning up nicely. I've seen the P50 around. In some ways its a little like the NN50 Gyro. Honda put a lot of effort to minimize the engine. In the NN50, the engine trans and muffler fits under a cover which looks like a fender. P50 shows a cyl, but all else is in that big hub. It looks more 'ped' and less 'mo'. BTW - show us where the muffler is sometime (in the hub?? )

Greetings:

I have a source for cable-making supplies I can send you manana. Beatrice Cycles or somp'n. Care to share yours?

What was Honda-san thinking in 1968?! If Lockheed L-1011s had drum brakes, that would be the size!

Sorry TJ, I know how that headlight bucket can be envied. I couldn't find one for my Z build a few years ago. I'm keeping it, trying to keep as original as possible.

MW, the muffler looks like two pie pans welded together, it just goes on the end of the pipe. But it's also hard to get, I'm going to get a repo from CMSNL for $99 euros, whatever that comes out to be.

Wheel, my cables are fine, I just need to recover the spiral sheath, I've done it before with a few layers of heat shrink. The rear brakes are in that hub, and are huge.

Got it back together. Not too pretty, but it is what it is.

The only problem at the moment is I can't get it to run without pouring some gas in the carb. Seems to be getting gas to the bowl, but it won't feed the carb itself.

Going to disassemble and check a few passages. Why do carbs hate me so?

Almost sold it. I replaced the tube from the engine to the carb, just a little piece of rubber about 5/8" ID x about 3" long and tightened the clamps and now it seems to be running fine. It's raining here, so no road test today, hopefully tomorrow. If all goes well, I might just tear it down and get the frame and stuff powdercoated.

We'll see.

I wouldn't powdercoat it. That would be a shame. It would also lower it's value as an antique (and this is an antique, at this point) since you're removing the original finish.

The original paint appears to be in pretty good condition. Hit it with cleaner wax by hand to polish it instead.

Anyone have a suggestion to remove the old sticker on the front forks? The sticker is like a licence plate year sticker, but thicker. I don't want to scrape it too much, I've already tried a little and scratched the paint.

Sorry about the crappy pic.
