89 Elite E "Sidewalk Pounder"

Post by wikked_spree57 »

Ok so I got this 89 Elite practically free (along the lines of a case of beer), it was missing the front axle and both tires and tubes and all the plastic. But the engine ran perfect. We swapped in a trailing front end out of my old Powermax frame, so it now not only has better front suspension but hydraulic disk brakes. I need to get a master cylinder, the one I have for it sticks.

It's nothing but a cherry seat, set of gauges and lights now. It looks pretty cool, and my buddy at the shop pulled a prank and added about half a cup of Traxxas Top Fuel (33% nitromethane) to my almost full gas tank. Needless to say it has yet to have negative side effects, but did give noticeable power gain. It causes it to idle really high and if you hit the kill switch it does nothing unless you open the throttle all the way.

I know it's probably not good for it, but I'm just gonna run the tank that way for now. If I burn it up, oh well, I'll big bore it. Hah.

I'll get pictures up as soon as I find my d*** memory card for my camera ;)

Yeah yeah, I'm still working on the pics, haha. I started having this problem with it today, keep in mind there's no longer nitro in the system.

I was riding and the d*** thing just cut out, like something was stuck in the jets. So I tore the carb apart and it was clear, but I cleaned it good. As a matter of fact, 4 times. Doesn't seem to be the problem. If I hit WOT when it starts to die, it doesn't do anything for a second then just backfires insanely loud out the exhaust.

I thought it was a fuel problem, but it does it at the exact same time intervals, of which I have checked and always have great fuel flow when this occurs. It literally acts like someone hit the kill switch.

And once it dies off, I kick it again, it fires up for like 3 seconds and won't take throttle. For a while today it would start back up after a few tries, go another few hundred feet, backfire and stop. Like it has to cool for a minute.

Here's what I already did:
-Cleaned carb several times, with SteamShark, carb clean and compressed air.
-Knocked through one baffle with a drill
-Checked all electrical connections
-Cleaned the carb some more.

And now, it only fires up for those three seconds and nothing else. Won't even let me ride it now. Airbox is present with a good filter(cleaned and re-oiled), as well as all other proper parts to run.

Any ideas?

Change the plug, that nitro is real hard on plugs.

Of all things, I never thought of that. But would that really have that effect on it? That's crazy. I got a few plugs in the drawer, I'll see what happens.
